LET THE PLAYERS DECIDE THE GAME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know it’s humorous. When the refs are letting things go they are criticized for incompetence. When they tighten things up they are criticized for not letting the players decide the game.

We’ve all taken issue with the occasional call or missed call during the passion of the moment but in the end if anyone thinks they can do a better job than the officials in the zebra stripes here’s what you can do about it:

http://cflofficials.ca/howtobecomeacflofficial.asp

The reason for no flag for tossing the ball into the stands is because there were more Ticats Fans than Argos Fans so technically it was Hamilton’s Home Game :rockin:

The best game is when the officials are not noticed !! It’s been a long time since that happened :thdn:

When the game is being over called to the extent it is now it is not the officials fault it is the league. They mandate what they call and to what degree they call it. The catastrophe that is CFL officiating this year is the product of the league not the guys in stripes. If it was one official then yes he wears it, but this is being done by every official in the league and if you don’t think they are told how to call the game by the league you are sadly mistaken. Happens in all pro sports.

Regarding throwing the ball into the crowd. On an offensive touchdown - where you are using balls provided by your own team - that are broken in to the point that your quarterback likes the feel - you CAN throw your own teams ball into the stand.

If you score on a turnover and throw the ball into the stands - hence throwing one of the other teams balls into the stands - it IS by rule a penalty.

Here’s my idea from awhile back.

One thing is for sure. This is one season that I can’t wait for it to be over. Usually the season is so short, but this year it seems to be dragging on… Well I guess it is a week longer then last season, but it seems even longer.

Yeah, sure. If your team was victimized by a non-call from the zebras, you’d be in here whining about the refs for being blind to obvious infractions. It’s all homerism, plain and simple. You’re butt-hurt because your team lost. Suck it up.

Offside? Time count violation? Face-masking? By all means, throw the flag!

It's the ticky-tack subjective ones that burn me up.

If the guy's like 4 and 1/2 yards away from a returner (who really knows anyway as it can't be measured exactly) and the flag gets thrown? Come on! Or in the Lions-Bombers game yesterday when the Bomber receiver caught the ball and slipped. He started to get up but Elimimian landed hard on him and a flag gets thrown for unnecessary roughness. Really?? Isn't football a contact sport??

4.5 yards is less than the 5 yards and that’s quite clearly in the rule book…where exactly would you have the line drawn? 5 yards is the rule. Not 4 or 4.5 but 5 yards. You’re inside five yards and it’s a penalty, period. Why is this so hard?

And it’s (the five yard zone) measured radially from the ball.

Football is a contact sport but it’s not a cheap shot sport. If the guy is down, just touch him, whistle goes. Simple. If the actions of a player are unnecessary and rough, it’s Unnecessary Roughness. Again, quite simple.

That Elimimian UR call really burned me up. How is that a penalty? May as well give all the players flags.

Exactly.

Unsportsmanlike Conduct flags are up over 90% this year. That’s not because the refs suddenly feel like calling more of them. It’s because the league added more things to the list of what gets you a flag.

Too many PI calls, and general confusing about PI? That’s on the league, especially with the mistake that is PI review.

Too many penalties for offside, holding, no yards, procedure, and time counts? Tell the players to stop breaking the rules. It’s not like these ones are vague or subjective.

“Let the players decide the game” is a pretty silly phrase. Players committing stupid penalties IS the players deciding the game. They don’t have to do that. If the refs just ignore that stuff, you get a free for all and fans whining about how refs are biased for the non-calls instead.

One comes to mind this weekend. Keith Shologan slamming a players head into the turf long after the whistle is blown and players getting up from the pile. The OP would like the players to decide  So they can then sue the league claiming the league was irresponsible and caused them to live with brain damage

I don’t like the broken flow of games this season more than anyone else but I am convinced that it will result in a better game, healthier players, more skills being displayed. Also over time will remove the stigma with US agents that the CFL is a meat grinder.

What exactly is Jim Barker doing behind the official, and why exactly was he allowed to be there in the first place?

His being there should've been an automatic bench penalty,no ifs ands or buts about it. As some of you have already clearly posted a penalty is a penalty,so WTF is this allowed,if anything this pic looks extremely controversial and makes the league look extremely bad :thdn: Okay all you Ref defenders out there,go ahead, let's hear you explain away this one and try to justify it !!!

Buddy I was saying it all week last week. The ref had full intentions of giving TOR a redoo if they didn’t get it on 3rd & goal. The CFL & its love affair with Toronto and it’s terrible fan base is inexcusable.

and his hand is clearly on the flag and ready to go.

CFL is bush league nothing more. It’s sad because it’s entertaining game. Toronto needs to go away. Spend a few years out of the league until their pathetic fan base decides to back them.

That picture irritates me. Something needs to be done about that. You can cleary see the ball has been snapped as the offensive lineman are all moving forward and it appears the ball has indeed been put in motion.

If like some of you are stating that the refs are just going by the book and calling EVERYTHING then at the least this should have been offsetting penalties of 10 yds apiece and a re down with the ball placed at the 6 yard line. I mean fair is fair, right? to all you Ref apologists out there. I hope that this pic stirs up a hornet's nest, please someone please try to explain how exactly that Barker is allowed to perch behind the ref when the rules clearly state that he has no business being there in the 1rst place.

For all the stuff they call, there's a lot they don't. As mentioned, there's a lot of holding going on in the trenches that's overlooked. And there's a lot of illegal contact on a receiver. This last Bombers vs Lions game there were numberous instances I saw where BC DBs would grab a bomber receiver by the shoulder pad to turn them or pull them off their route beyond the 5 yard mark. For me that's the more frustrating part, watching stuff let go most of the game then they finally call it here or there and sometimes it's a minor infraction compared to those they have turned a blind eye to.

Has anyone seen the stats though? I would've guessed the number of penalty calls per game has come down a bit since midseason.

Yeah, there’s lots of holding in the trenches on each and every play…but it doesn’t mean it’s a penalty. Unless it prevents a defensive player from making a tackle on the ball carrier, it’s nothing…unless you want 4 or 5 flags per play.

As for Jim Baker snugging up behind the sideline official of course he shouldn’t be there but if he was quiet (this, I grant you, would be unusual) then the officials probably didn’t even know he was there…and I’d suggest they had more important things to concentrate on given the photo.

Refs don’t “let things go”. It usually means it just wasn’t a penalty.

If you played this game you would know that players are coached to push the rules until they’re called on it…until the coaches change their philosophy then the officials are going to be forced to make numerous judgements on every one of the 160 or so plays in a football game. You guys that work yourself into a frenzy but nitpicking a few of them…knock yourself out but I’m going to enjoy the game…it’s a lot more fun.

Bobo,

I’m trying to understand your reasoning. Is there a rule that said Barker was not allowed to stand where he was standing? He was not on the field of play. He was not interfering with the ref. My understanding is that coaches are permitted to stand between the side line and the bench area. Is there a rule saying it can only be between certain yard markers? I must admit I’m not up to date on all of the rules so if you can show me something that supports why Barker should have received a penalty I’d be grateful
