This week I donated several years’ worth of memorabilia to both the Hockey and CFL Halls of Fame. While at the Hockey Hall of Fame Research Centre at The MasterCard Centre in Etobicoke I noticed that Leo Cahill was a member of the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame. When I delivered my items to the CFL Hall of Fame, I noticed that his names of many of Leo’s Argos from the late 60’s and early 70’s.
This man resurrected a moribund team that had been the laughing stock of the league throughout the 60’s (I know, because I was in the stands suffering). Only an “Act of God? called Russ Jackson prevented the Argos from reaching the Grey Cup in 1969 and 1970, as well as another Act of God called Joe Theismann’s broken ankle stopped them in 1972. What happened in 1971 speaks for itself...
Anyway this man has been possibly the most respected promoter of the game in Toronto, other than Mr. Clemons...and he’s deservedly in the Hall as a player. I would dearly love to see Leo Cahill enshrined as the builder that he truly is.
