League discipline for Bighill, Macbeth?

If the league is truly concerned with protecting QBs, then what discipline should be meted out to Bighill? This big moose had zero reson for “rag-dolling” the much smaller Patterson…not only a late hit, but on the last play of the game? Do you think he should get a fine, suspension, or what?
And, the loser MacBeth dissing the league for 5 day interval between games: what should his discipline be, considering second offense in a couple weeks?

If I was commissioner I would definitely call AB down to my office to explain what the heck he was thinking with 00:00 on the clock.

But I have the same question for SP and the RR coaches. Either try a fg or take a knee. I was screaming at the tv as the play unfolded. Why are they risking getting their qb hurt.

BTW, MacBeth had a real flimsy reason for his rant: injuries. I just did some research, and injuries in a short weeks are not significantly higher than on long weeks. In fact, resulting man-games lost is actually lower in “short-week” injuries.

First of all, the size of the player doesn’t factor in the slightest.
Second of all, it was not late and completely legal.
Third, I know I’d be mad if the shoe were on the other foot, Bighill did not need to use as much force as he did there, but if you’re trying to make a play you have to expect the opposition will try and stop you. It is silly to think anything less.

Edit: Apologies, I don’t post on your board, thought this was a main board thread.

I don’t care if you post here. Those “rules” are pretty silly anyway. But you are so wrong!!! Bighill didn’t just tackle him after he released the ball, he then purposely landed on top of Shea…on the last play of the game. Go to 3Dnation for the full discussion. Bighill needs to be fined, or suspended for deliberate attempt to injure. And, it was TOTALLY ILLEGAL: late hit, and spearing! Don’t even pretend that Bighill was trying to make a play on the last play of the game, with a 10 point deficit. I can’t even believe that you would defend a cheap shot that is indefensible!!!

So…look at 3Dnation, with stats from the NFL, with associated commentary, which clearly shows that even their Sunday/Thursday tilts show LESS injuries, not more.

You screamed at your TV too? Mine was so covered in spit that I had to hose it down afterwards. :beaver:

I totally agree with @Cflbestfan here. That was a coaching error. Biggy was kind enough to point out to Cory Mace the error of exposing one’s star players to unnecessary last second punishment and if Shea Patterson’s ribs got a wee bit compressed during the demo then it was still worth it.

Unless Coach Mace is cut from the same cloth as Coach Dickenson, he’ll learn from his mistake.

Imagine if that was Zach Collaros taking the snap and running away from charging linebackers to kill the clock… oh wait a minute, Coach Mike O’Shea would never put his quarterback in that situation to begin with.

So to sum up: thanks to Bighill’s big last second hit THAT SHOULDN’T HAVE HAD THE SLIGHTEST CHANCE OF HAPPENING, Coach Cory Mace has learned from this experience to either take a knee or take the three points OR… he’s learned nothing and he’ll continue to expose his starting quarterbacks to unnecessary hits just like his predecessor.

i do not see anything wrong with your post.
Players are coached to play between the whistles and PLAY HARD. Yes Adam may have done what he did on the last play because of frustration and possibly anger too. Possibly a late hit? not for me to decide because it was a very close call… It was also on a QB but the QB was also scrambling. Yes the size of the player does not factor…but the manner and intent in which the hit took
place does. That alone will make the play have cause to be looked at.
Something may come of it, or not.

IMHO
Bighill should/could/will get fined for it

I am hoping the play will be looked at and a proper well reasoned result is what takes place. As @Jon said this play will be scrutinized far different by fans of every team than the league will see it

As I said in other threads, it didn’t seem to me that the hit was late or dirty at the time and that the Riders were the author of their own misfortune in even running the play. But I haven’t re-watched it several times as the league will surely do. I think a fine at the absolute worst, although I’m not sure what rule Bighill broke in making a tackle on a live play.

The week before Winnipeg had back to back delayed kneels against Calgary to end the game. Presumably they indicated that to Calgary before the play or Calgary recognized the sportsmanship and simply let them delay kneel to run out the clock. I have no idea why Saskatchewan didn’t think of this yesterday, especially since the game was out of reach and even a disastrous fumble and TD on the last play a la the Philadelphia Eagles wouldn’t have mattered, although such a scenario would have won the game for Calgary with only a 4 point difference.

If Bighill made that tackle in the middle of the 4th quarter it would have been fine. I am not aware of a rule that prohibits sacking a QB because it is the last play of the game. The play should never have been run in my opinion.

Whether or not the play should have been run or not will have no bearing if a fine is warranted or not. I am a fan of one team I have said how I feel about how it may or may not end. You are a fan for the other team, if the roles were reversed we both might see it far different.
I just hope the league handles it the way it should be doing so.

Well said. When a QB runs a play that could result in a score, the defense has a right to make a play within the rules, even if it is the final play of the game.

Agreed that whether the play should have been run or not has no bearing on whether there should be a fine. That is simply a mistake by Patterson/Mace by choosing to run an unnecessary play that put the QB in harm’s way for no reason against an obviously frustrated opponent.

What I am wondering is what was illegal about the hit? The vast majority of posters on the forum didn’t see it as a late hit. I am not aware of a penalty as I said for playing until the final whistle, especially when it shouldn’t have been necessary to do so. I guess we’ll see what the league thinks but I am struggling to find an infraction on the play. He hit him too hard? I have seen lots of hard clean hits on live plays this weekend.

I don’t think a fine is warranted, nor discipline either

As you said, rookie coach and rookie QB … Hopefully just a learning experience to be smarter in the future

Legal hit, yes, but Bighill looked like a complete jerk for doing it. He knew the situation, & taking Patterson down like that was not necessary. He knew in that situation his play would be incendiary. Legal, but not smart, in fact downright stupid.

LEGAL HIT? Are you kidding? It was late. Then when Shea was on the ground, he fell on him. Late hit, and spearing! Fine is not enough, he should be suspended for at least one game. Look at the replay guys!!! And it was the last play of the game!
