The same thing your previous OC and DC did as head coaches … not much. But as coordinators they both had success. Benevides wasn’t a success as a head coach, but he won a Grey Cup as DC. And in SSK he’d be your DC. Just like Richie Hall, a failure as a HC but a success at DC.
Lapo has had a couple of years analyzing and I think it has given him some tools to break down other teams offenses and defenses better. I think he would be a good choice as an OC even though he has "failed" in the past.
Conversely, you could argue that being out of the game for a few years has made him irrelevant to coaching in today's CFL. He's never won anything as a coordinator or a HC. I like LaPo but your reasoning for preferring him over other candidates is specious IMO.
Lol of course you can argue anything to make a point in your favor but tell me What has either Beneviedies or Chappy recently done to make them more favorable then say Garcia or Lapo? Nothing in my opinion. You say Beneviedies and Chappy have both won cups but so has many other coaches. It's not so much of what you have done in the past but what have you done lately? What would make you think that either of the ex Lions would be a good fit with the Riders? What special accomplishments have they achieved? The Lions got rid of them for a reason . Yes Beneviedies may be all right for a DC but Chappy? I just don't see an upside to either to be honest and especially Chappy. At least Lapo knows how the Riders tick and he knows that he is under a microscope in Riderville. Do either Beneviedies or Chappy have that experience? Look at this past season when they had to "guarantee a win" just to get people to come out. In Regina that does not need to be done because the fans are there but they know football and they are extremely passionate about the Riders for the most part. That can be good or bad but it is what it is and if a coach or a player are not use to this kind of "bug under a magnifying glass" scenario sometimes they don't handle it so well. In BC the Lions are kind of a distraction from what is happening with the Canucks. In Regina it's almost like being in Toronto or Montreal only instead of hockey its football. I honestly don't think either Benevideis or Chappy could handle that kind of scrutiny.
Why not? I doubt he would come here as an OC though. I would be a bit surprised if that was the case that Wall eye wouldn’t have been all over him to be the new HC. It would take some big bucks to get him to come North again I would think. no doubt he would be a hot commodity and it would also be a bit of a surprise if the Als wouldn’t have gotten wind of it.
It would be a great acheivment to land him I have little doubt but again going to an OC spot would be highly unlikely in my opinion.
you mean to tell me, they couldn't find even someone fresh and knew, but with experience, I don't think this will turn out well, I'm really sorry to say. a guy who wasn't good enough for wally, is somehow going to be better here, ???? i can't see it. it seems like were starting to go backwards. but I hope I'm wrong.
ed I completely agree. Taking on BC Lions rejects is not a good way to go. Trestmen would be a different catch though. He left on a high note and was very successful with the Als.
Well it sounds like it's going to be Chappy though.
"The Saskatchewan Roughriders appear to have found the man they want to be their new offensive coordinator.
Sources tell the Green Zone that former B.C. Lions offensive coordinator and current Simon Fraser University head coach Jacques Chapdelaine will be the new Riders offensive coordinator once the deal is signed, which hasn't happened yet.
This works alongside a report by the Green Zone's Glen Suitor on Wednesday afternoon that Chapelaine has resigned from his position as Simon Fraser's head coach.
Chapdelaine would be taking over for George Cortez after the team announced recently that his contract would not be renewed with the team. Cortez spent the last two seasons in charge of the Riders offence."
no way
the reports are that there were 5 prime candidates, the 2 public front runners being Lapo and Chappy, and that both of them were willing to play ball. One is one guy;s fav, and one is another’s. One is In your face aggressive, one is laid back and a consideration for more in the future.
I hope that this is not the case,
when they start resigning our offensive free agents that will clairify the picture a bit ?
I hope that I am wrong in my feelings about Taman and Chamblin.
but Taman's previous track record ?? well it speaks for itself.
Everyone likes to bash BT, but really my beef with him is only his willingness to trade early round drafts. Taman is NOT forcing a staff decision…he is letting Chamblin make the calls on his staff and providing some feedback and assistance…exactly what he should be doing.
Look at his track record indeed:
He inherited a pretty bad Bomber club, rebuilt them for 2 years, and finally got them to the cup. In his final year there he was not really running the team…he left because of it. We saw the 5 year spiral because of senior staff micromanagement after that. Pretty good job I would say.
In Sask, he went 2 seasons as GM in name only…hell, he wasn’t even allowed to hire the HC he wanted. He held down a chair. Then he got the team pointed in the right direction and got a cup the next year. Last season DD going down hurt the team, but it was also expected that the rental player loss would hinder this club for a year or 2…people were fine with that…they won a cup at home.
So to speak of his track record…well…what of it? It is not bad…some draft pick losses aside. Even the loss of those to chase the cup in 2013 I am fine with, but the ones I have issues with are 3 picks for Boudreaux as a rental, and trading essentially a 2nd round pick for Williams and Bartel
Myself being a long time Lions fan ,feel sorry for Riderville for hiring Chapdelaine. Watch for the same old predictable plays that fail once the defence see s it a couple dozen times. Receiver sweep for a loss was always my favourite.
but tell me What has either Beneviedies or Chappy recently done to make them more favorable then say Garcia or Lapo? Nothing in my opinion. You say Beneviedies and Chappy have both won cups but so has many other coaches. It's not so much of what you have done in the past but what have you done lately?
By that logic, you would never have hired the coordinators who got you your Grey Cup last year: Cortez and Hall. Neither man had done jack for a long time (Hall last won a GC in 2007, Cortez in 2008). But you hired them and you won a championship. Hmmm...
Every coach fails, and every coach is hired to be fired. Chasing the coach who is coming off success has no greater chance of succeeding than hiring a guy who experienced success a while ago.
What would make you think that either of the ex Lions would be a good fit with the Riders? What special accomplishments have they achieved?
What "special accomplishments" does LaPolice have? Getting fired the year after a Grey Cup appearance? Being an OC of middling ability? Being out of the game for a few years?
Your candidate doesn’t have any of those special accomplishments, so it’s a wash. All you can do is look at track record and assess. And on track record, Chapdelaine wins.
The Lions got rid of them for a reason .
Yes, because coaches are always fired for purely logical and correct reasons. Using this rationale, you'd never have hired Cortez and Hall, because both were fired for good reasons, right?
At least Lapo knows how the Riders tick and he knows that he is under a microscope in Riderville. Do either Beneviedies or Chappy have that experience? Look at this past season when they had to "guarantee a win" just to get people to come out. LOL, you are overestimating the impact of SSK as a football market. It's the CFL, not the NHL. Big difference. If that's the only basis for preferring LaPo, it's pretty hollow, especially when you consider that Lapo's offence wasn't any great shakes in 2009.
sorry but I disagree. The Riders are 3rd in sales only to the Toronto maple leafs and the montreal canadians so that is a pretty big market share. You basically keep saying what is wrong with Chappy so I'm going to ask what do you think makes him right?
I have given other reasons why I think Lapo would be a better choice and yet you keep dismissing them.
I have heard from Lions fans that they were glad Chappy was gone and wanted him gone way before he finally did leave. So are you saying that those fans had no basis for wanting him gone and just for the sake of change? To a certain degree tha can happen but I also think that there are plenty of other fans that based their reasoning in the Lions performance with him running the offense.
