Hello, CFL fans. Hope you have been able to process all the changes that have swept over the playing fields of the great northern league this past week or so.
What? You’re willing to pay your most valuable stars more money like we do?
Holy smokes. Let me catch my breath… Hufnagel might come over to your place and smack you upside the head for that kind of talk. Do have any idea how much force would be required to pry open Huf’s wallet? It’s been rusted shut for nearly a decade.
I really think the Riders have done a great job bringing in quality players and assuming the coaching change works out (can’t be worse than it had been) I think the real fight for the West will be a three-way battle between BC, Bombers, and Riders. I am not sure Winnipeg has enough returning talent or that their geriatric roster will have enough stamina to endure a grueling season and be there in the end though. That means BC and Saskatchewan will be fighting for the division at end of year. In that case, I think it comes down to the better coach and that, in my book, until proven otherwise, leaves Campbell and the Lions punching tickets to the Cup. I sense change is coming…except in Hamilton. Bo Levi’s best days are fading into the horizon through a rearview mirror. Just boggles the mind that professional administrators looked at the film from the past three seasons and thought, “He’s got another good year in 'im.” No disrespect to Bo. I am getting older and I know that things lost rarely come back and when they do, they are not what they once were. If Hamilton is going to be part of the fight for the East, they are going to have to figure out how to find a proper Pivot. Ottawa did a solid job bringing in Brown, but there were a lot of curious coaching decisions made last season and I am not sure a Quarterback can fix that. The Double Blue has a lot to reconfigure but they have the coach and the Quarterback to make a run…but that is a lot to lose and continue winning at their recent level. Still, with Hamilton doing Hamilton things, and the Red Blacks’ head coach seeming not quite ready for primetime, it looks like the Boatmen could be hanging around when the leaves change colors. I do still think though, it will be Montreal’s Division to lose. Having written all that, it would be a way more exciting season if the Riders and TiCats found themselves battling it out for the Grey Cup. Isn’t this time of year the best? It is that sweet spot in time where clowns like me get to be experts. I really cannot wait for the season to start!
That’s the path we’re heading down now. Our coffers are empty. Kyle Walters will be tasking Danny Mac to re-stock our O-Line and D-Line with some heavy young talent come spring. I don’t see any way out of this. We can’t afford proven veterans.
Poor Zach… he’ll have to get used to ducking and weaving in and out of his comfort zone until the new guys gel.
You just signed a 34 and 38 yr old to protect your 38 yr old Qb and juat re-signed a 36 yr old to anchor your dline; and you call the Bombers geriatrics??
Actually, I didn’t sign anyone and I’m a Bomber fan. That’s why I’m so hard on the Bomber’s current situation. I appreciate the organization’s loyalty to the guys who got them there, but they should have been developing some young talent, letting more older guys sign elsewhere, while bringing in younger talent to take their place. Maybe they could have balanced loyalty with the future of the club? I’ll support them but I’m not going to pretend other teams have no chance of beating them on the field. Besides, I’m a CFL fan and want the best to rise to the top, especially in the post-season.
You can’t predict the season’s outcome in February. Last year it looked the Als would be dead last in the league as they lost their QB, star receiver and we’re told not to spend any money on free agents. Result - a Grey Cup win in November.
Love the West this coming season not to sound to disingenuous but everybody got a shot at first this year ! It will come down to who stays healthy lose say a starting QB or elite defensive player maybe all that’s needed to tip the balance either for or against your teams post season chances on paper right now everyone looks good . Let’s see come Labour Day whose healthy whose not. Go Riders!!
Oh, of course not! I can–we all can–dream a little…pretend a little…play in the sandbox a little and ponder the possibilities. That is what February, March, and April are all about, no? Every fan gets to dream. Right now, somewhere in Edmonton, there is a kid running around in the yard pretending he is Tre Ford, with three minutes left in the game, leading the Elks to next year’s Grey Cup. Maybe he is pretending that the snowbank adjacent the driveway is the goal line and he needs to leap up and over to score the major. Is it likely the Elks will be in the Grey Cup next year? Possible, maybe, but not likely. But that kid is a fan. It is this time of year when he–when we all–get to dream a little. Good times!
