Landry's 10 free agency takeaways

The music has stopped. Seats have been taken.

Or at least many of them have, anyway.

With lots of signatures now on newly completed contracts, we can start to take stock of what’s going on in CFL free agency 2025.

While every other team seems to have strengthened weaknesses with free agency signings the Stamps might be worse. The 2024 version was porous on defense. So Vaughters, Rose, Awe, Judge, and Houston were jettisoned and replaced by Orimalade, Myles Brown, Webb and Moncrief. Overall the defence is worse. The weakest part of the team got weaker. Dave Dickenson is apparently happy with the result. Who will be thrown under the bus at the end of the 2025 season? Look in the mirror Dave!

“Some” don’t say it’s about winning on the line of scrimmage. Everybody knows that that’s what it’s all about. Riders looking good.

I agree the Elks made some big splashes all over the field and with a brand new coaching staff they’ll likely come out of the gate slow. But they look like they could challenge for a playoff spot now as Calgary is not looking at all promising. Will Elks fans be patient with Tre Ford? He’s got the physical tools no doubt but he has a lot to learn between the ears still.

I think Elks will do more than just challenge for a play off spot. They will be near the top of the West in my view. They upgraded in so many areas in free agency. Ed Hervey did a great job. How did he manage to stay within the Cap! I hope Tre Ford has a great season except when he’s playing the Riders. I can see a few teams struggling in the West. The Bombers are one of them. However, with Lady Luck on their side they may make it to the finals!

Elks signed a ton of good players but they still need to learn to play like a team. That won’t happen overnight.

Riders are basically intact. Expect them to be hot out of the gate.
