Kiss the 2025 Witches v.I - MTL Smoked Meat

From the PBP thread:

"Can our Defence stop the MTL running game and stifle MBT?
Can our Offence string drives together and score majors against the strong MTL Defence?
Can our STs cover kicks/punts and open lanes for returns?

We’re up against a relatively hurting Montreal team, so if we play good, fundamental football, we have a good chance for our first win of the season."

The answer to the first one is a resounding YES. The Defence scored two TDs - a Pick-6 off a tip by Veresuk, and a fumble recovery in the end zone by Howsare. Tackling was about 10000000% better than in previous weeks, the Secondary actually covered receivers, and there really wasn’t any running game to worry about.

The answer to the second is a definite “sorta”. We had a very good drive to start the 4th quarter, but ran into issues with short yardage. All year Litre has been running behind Revenberg and getting the FD or TD. This game, the Montreal D stuffed us multiple times. We had to run what probably was our best 2-point play on 3rd down to score a TD.
We are finally starting to see complementary football with Lawlor and White.
BLM had decent stats, but he had a few too many overthrows on deep passes and a few high throws that left his receivers out to dry. He has to clean that up. The good thing is that he took care of the football and didn’t turn it over.

The answer to the third is WOW. Aside from the start of the second half where Leigghio had to make a TD-saving tackle, the coverage teams were excellent. Ternowski made the play of the game tackling the MTL returner on his 5-yard line, and on the next play Howsare scored his TD. Returns looked better, and NiCo had two excellent plays - the coffin-corner punt to the 1-yd-line, and the fake punt with a pass to Ternowski for a FD. Leigghio was perfect on FGs and PATs.

As @Count_Floyd1 mentioned, MTL had a few starters on their Offence injured, but all Defensive starters were playing. I thought this would be a difficult game, but it was a full team win for Hamilton.

BLM won his 100th game in 143 games - the fastest ever in the CFL by far.

On a funny note, it seemed whenever Luke Wilson was analyzing the game, we scored a Defensive TD. I will lobby TSN for him to do this every game we play… lol

Montreal were 2.5-point favourites this game, and we won by a bunch.

I’m going to savour this win for a while.

Veresuk is the real deal. The sleeper is Kendricks. 5 CFL games and 5 sacks. And he’s a tackle. These are 2 gems in the front 7 and we needed that.

Kudos to our hard-working National players: Johnny Augustine who sparked the offence, Devin Veresuk for his pick 6 and 8 tackles, Tyler Ternowski who made a great tackle, Mark Liegghio whose tackle prevented an Als TD, kicked 2 FGs and 4 point afters (but still struggles with kickoffs :face_with_raised_eyebrow:), and Stravros Kasantsonis for his consistent play at safety. Also, Global Constantinou (NiCo) who was punting great (6 punts, 47.2 yd avg) with 2 landing inside the 10.

I’m not complaining because it didn’t matter, but I don’t recall so many times in a game when the ball spots were clearly off. Was anyone else noticing it throughout the game? Like anyone watching it on TV notice the spots were off?

Yeah that was a great title.

Hopefully we beat the Al’s one more time. Then we can call the next thread:

Yes, I did notice it a couple of times. IMHO CFL officiating during the last few years has occasionally looked confused and unsure of themselves…

Well done, Cats. Decisive win in all three phases.

Defense Defense Defense.

Howsare was everywhere, even before his TD.

Veresuk is something special.

DB coverage and tackling was great.

Augustine was great, running, catching and blocking. Keep him in as starter.

Kickoffs were short and Kickoff coverage was poor, Montreal would start around their own 45 after each Kickoff.

BLM played smart and got his 100th win!

Hitting on early round draft picks is what separates the haves from the have nots.

Starting guys just because of their passport put you at a big disadvantage.

Very promising start from our 1st pick.

He doesn’t remind me of anyone. I’m not thinking he does. No one is thinking it. I refuse to say it.

This pretty much sums it up.

The key takeaway here is that our guys all stepped up to actually make the plays required. Certainly refreshing and hopefully a sign of things to come.

Tonight the Cats beat, arguably the class of the league, and should inspire confidence in this team that they have the pieces to win.

Yes, Liegghio needs to work on his kick-offs and try to get another 8-10 yards on his distance… I thought he would be better this year, but so far, not much improvement.

Here are the 8 kickoffs during the game - 2 by Maltos, 6 by Liegghio

Maltos had 2 Kick-Offs (69yd avg)
1Qtr: 70yd to H10 (27yd return to H37)
4Qtr: 68yd to H12 (31yd return to H43)

Liegghio had 6 Kick-Offs (61yd avg)
2Qtr: 67yd to M13 (29yd return to M42)
3Qtr: 57yd to M23 (38yd return to H49)
3Qtr: 62yd to M18 (30yd return to M48)
4Qtr: 66yd to M14 (27yd return to M41)
4Qtr: 57yd to M23 (28yd return to M51)
4Qtr: 59yd to M21 (25yd return to M46)

Liegghio is what he is. He’s not going to suddenly add 10 yards to his kickoffs. He’s a very accurate placekicker (one of the most accurate) that doesn’t have a huge leg for kickoffs. The Ticats might be better served trying to teach Constantinou to kickoff or finding a punter that can do kickoffs, or just accepting that Liegghio has his limitations.

That fact is probably what helps his FG percentage as well. He doesn’t have a big booming leg like Medlock had. So with Liegghio you don’t even attempt the 57 yarders. It’s the same with Paredes in Calgary. He’s extremely accurate but almost every kick is under 50.
