One of the all time most loved and most remembered stars of this franchise.
It’s a sad day in Tiger town … Now that he’s gone maybe the CFL can finally do the right thing and elect him into the HOF posthumously.

IMO, I think it’s disgusting Joe Zuger hadn’t been added to the HOF already.
A sad day indeed. The first CFL game I attended live was his record-setting performance in the 67-21 beatdown of the green Riders on 15 October 1962.
I was but 9 years old. . . but I remember it.
Thanks for the memories Mr Zuger.
Great TiCat - one of the best. Interesting that he only died today and yet the 3Down guys were able to find that out from the Alumni folks. I thought he was still living in the Hamilton area? Hoping to see an obit soon. R.I.P.
Time to put pressure on those CFL HOP folks…again!
I found the Tiger-Cat scoring summary on that remarkable day online (the Montreal Gazette):
1st Qtr (3 passing TDs)
04:52 Patterson
11:11 Henley
14:22 Henley
2nd Qtr (4 passing TDs)
00:55 Patterson
05:42 Patterson
11:32 Reid
13:35 Easterly
3rd Qtr
No scoring
4th Qtr (3 passing TDs)
01:42 Easterly (from Cosentino)
06:18 Henley
08:53 Henley (from Cosentino)
TOTAL:
10 passing TDs (8 Zuger, 2 Cosentino) + 7 converts by Sutherin
Henley had 4 TDs, Patterson 3 TDs, Easterely 2 TDs, Reid had 1 TD
NOTE:
It was Zuger’s first start at QB! He also played DB and punter!
RIP Joe Zuger. Never got to see him play but by all accounts a quiet, humble team guy with a great work ethic and live leg for punting. Stepped into the GM role when Sazio jumped ship and always handled himself with class. Condolences to his family. I believe he was still living on the West Mountain so may see an obit in the Spec.
I’ll always remember Zuger and Mosca visiting Herb Paterra in General Hospital a day after Herb blew his knee out at Ivor Wynn . Two great team mates visiting a future NFL coach .
The Hall of Fame voters should be ashamed of themselves for neglecting Joe’s outstanding contributions on and off the CFL field .
RIP Joe
Condolences
He lived across the street from a friend of mine,
walked by his house on my way home from Westmount every day, saw him a number of times puttering in his garage
Agreed, The CFL HoF should be ashamed
“You have to be a division all-star, a CFL all-star, and I was never any of them,”
That’s what Joe, himself, is quoted as saying about it, in an article, from almost 10 years ago, that tells much about him and explains the likely reason why he never the got call from The Hall:
Something, so far unmentioned, which I’ve thought of, on a subject of great importance to most TiCat fans, today:
Only two players in Tiger-Cat history have won more than one Grey Cup game, in which they started at QB. Joe was one of them, winning 2 of the 3 championship games, he started at QB, and overall was on the winning side in 3 of the 5 Grey Cups he played in. Then, later, he was a winner, in ‘86, as the team’s GM. (Bernie Faloney won 2 of the 6 Grey Cups, in which he was the Tiger-Cats’ starting QB).
Ooops!
This is part of what the club put out on ticats.ca, last evening:
“The Homestead, Pennsylvania native helped the Ticats capture three Grey Cup championships (1963, 1964 and 1967) while earning Grey Cup Most Valuable Player honours in 1967.”
Typo? Or, poor research?
They just eliminated one of my Grey Cup heartbreaks.
I have a few more that I would like to forget.
Just a correction here… Zuger played in 5 Grey Cups with Hamilton (62,63,64,65,67) not 6 . He won 3 (63,65,67) and lost 2 (62,64)
Typo or poor research ? I would say a little of both . CFL.ca has a lot of both of them . The correction should read (1963 , 1965 , 1967) . They lost to the Lions in ‘64’ in what was the Lions 1rst Grey Cup championship in their team history .
You’re right. I corrected my post changing “6” to “5” in bold. Thanks bobo.
I’m looking forward to reading what Steve Milton writes about Joe.
I saw Joe Zuger play in the sixties , he was a winner ,just got it done ,whether that be passing or as a DB . My favorite Joe Zuger memories are of his absolutely amazing punts against a hurricane wind he would punt line drive spiraling kicks over the heads of the returners amazing the broadcasters and fans .
Thankyou #9 and condolences to Mr Zugers Family .
How does the Hall explain Ray Jauch over Joe Zuger ???
