i saw marcel dejardains at the argos game last night. which means, he saw collaros' performance first hand. i doubt he's still in the running to become a RedBlack.
Glenn is also a free agent. Dangerous to draft one of those, what if he doesn't want to play in Ottawa? He can just walk and they've got an empty spot.
I would tend to agree with what cflisthebest is saying. Calgary will protect Mitchell. With Burris heading in FA Hamilton will protect LeFevour. Collaros has cooled off though with Ray out for so long he'll have another 3-4 starts to get things going again. Unless Collaros has that resurgence, Willy is the top choice. Glenn will be the top veteran back up available and though he's had injury issues he's been less hurt and more productive than Drew Tate. A combo of Glenn and Willy gives then a good starting point. I can't imagine they take glenn and then take a huge gamble on a guy like Troy Smith. The only other monkey wrench I see is maybe a trade? I don't know if there are any rules regarding trading the players they draft, but a CFL team could see someone they like on another roster that's unprotected and work out a deal for Ottawa to select them for them. Maybe they take Willy and Collaros, trade away Collaros and work on a deal to sign Burris as a FA or trade him for another QB or another player/prospect. Are there rules for the draft prohibiting that kind of move? The "vet" QB could be a guy like McPherson too, Dejardins would know him from his time in MTL and may have taken a shine to him. If that's the case maybe he takes two young guys.
Could be Glenn but could be Burris as well. As for gambling on Smith I can’t see it. There are really two teams neck deep in young Canadian talent and that’s Montreal and Hamilton. I can’t see Ottawa plucking a ? mark at QB and losing out on a potential starting Canadian. Now that could change in the last half of the season.
The only CFL veteran QB I can imagine not being protected is Kerry Joseph in Edmonton. With Glenn being a free agent after this year, he won't need to be protected by Calgary. Drew Tate would then be protected.
unless Glenn signs an extension with the Stamps preceding the FA deadline, then Tate will be left unprotected.
I would imagine Calgary would prefer to keep Glenn and Mitchell splitting duties, with BLM becoming the eventual #1 starter sometime next season if not before.
Pretty broad statement by Hunt, borderline stating the obvious. Cflisthebest even describes it as the plan “seems to be”, so it sounds as though Hunt was fairly vague. I wouldn’t worry about it.
Where would Calgary have been without Kevin Glenn in 2012 & 2013? Not Grey Cup bound, that’s for sure. Tate is injury-prone and Bo Levi Mitchell hasn’t matured to the point that he can lead the Stamps. I would expect that the Stamps will re-sign KG and protect him, leaving Bo Levi Mitchell an irresistible prospect for the REDBLACKS.
I would also expect Henry Burris to be re-signed and protected. I don’t see an aging vet like Hank wanting to start from square one with an expansion franchise. I think he’s happy in Hamilton and the direction they’re headed.
As for Montreal, the sentimental choice is to protect Anthony Calvillo, but the practical choice is to protect Tanner Marsh. It would be controversial and cause an uproar amongst Als fans, but AC’s lost a step and has 1, maybe 2 seasons left in him if he’s lucky.
This will be one of the best off season in recent memory.
It's too bad there wasn't a 10th team coming in at the same time.
My choice is Willy and Drew Tate.
I don’t agree. I think they protect Mitchell and count on Glenn being a FA to ward Ottawa off. The best case scenario for them is either Glenn or Tate starting with Mitchell moving to #2. If Tate gets taken they can tell Glenn “here’s a new deal, you’re the starter.” If Glenn gets taken, they still have Tate locked up and Ottawa has to sign Glenn successfully before the FA window opens.

Probably, yes.

I can't see AC playing anywhere else with how things are going. If he gets taken, he probably retires.
Kevin Glenn's a temperamental player. If he feels he's being disrespected, he'll head somewhere else. He'll never return to Winnipeg because fans dissed his family in the stands after a playoff loss and taunted Bomber fans when he was with the Ti-Cats.
If the Stamps don't resign KG, I wouldn't surprised to see him in Ottawa. He's earned the #1 job and the respect that goes with it. If Calgary doesn't re-sign Glenn and protect him, they might live to regret it.
Well if Ottawa will steer clear of drafting FAs then why waste a protected spot on Burris who is going to become a FA? If Hamilton wants him back, leave him unprotected as a pending FA, Ottawa then would bypass him for that reason, and resign him after the draft.
Ottawa will be attractive to Glenn IMO because it brings him closer to his home in Detroit than Calgary does. Whether he goes there as a FA or is drafted, I think odds are pretty decent he becomes a REDBLACK.
As for AC, he still has an option year after this year and maybe he decides on yet another year, but I think he’ll leave it vague and hint at retirement hoping to scare off Ottawa from picking him and therefore allow Popp to protect one of the young guys like Marsh.
i feel this is a season i want to hurry up and get through, as the offseason will be more interesing than the 2013 season itself.
very strange to feel this way, but i do.
this is a transitional season, in my mind.
the off season will provide some fireworks, that's for sure.
