Wow. Danny Woodhead looked great for the JETS tonight. I would love to pick him up if he is deemed too small for the NFL. I think I read on a Jets forum that he has 4.33 speed. anyway he looked good at making guys miss in the open field. looked good in traffic too. didn't see him block or catch passes, and I have never seen him play before, but he looked really good tonight.
Yep. The guru has been on top of his game with the return game. Between receivers and DBs we had over 30 guys in TC that were potential returners, in a year where finding a return guy was “the number one priority” and where according to Joe Womack, “this was the best talent we have brought in since ET hit the scene” and mid season we needed to sign Jason Armstead to get a quality (hopefully) return guy.
I actually don’t mind this signing, as Jason is a good player who after a few mistakes, on and off the field, deserves another opportunity.
But I don’t see any need to give ET any props on this–addressing a major weakness that has been an ongoing issue ever since ET decided he didn’t need Dominique Dorsey…
I agree. This signing is a stop gap measure at best. I think Jason will improve our special teams return game but we definitely have to and should have been planning all along for the future and not just the moment. We haven’t brought in any young talent which we can say will be our returner of the future.
I’m not convinced Armstead is going to be a great addition but then again maybe he will be. It’s not really a move for the future, this could help us out this year and we desperately need help on special teams. There’s really no reason not to give it a try, I don’t think he could be worse than what we have already.
Kavis Reed said in a LeaderPost article that the issues on returns are a result of players not doing their assigned duties.
Maybe Morris and Charles and Foord were who he was talking about but i got the impression that he was referring to blocking schemes and/or tackling problems.
What I am trying to say is that I do not see how Armstead will help the guys who are missing their blocks, but maybe he will make them look good by running right past them.
Trading Armstead for Holmes and Getzlaf isn't exactly getting rid of him. That was a great trade. But ET has done a poor job of finding a good returner.
Well summed-up frustration, “cflisthebest”. Are we to believe that amongst the thousands of out-of work football players out there, not one of them can return a ball towards the opposition’s end zone better than the recycled Armstead. (Pause to remember his last visit to Mosaic in an Als uniform.) I suppose we should be at least partially pleased that - with this half-hearted attempt to find a new returner - the ‘Riders’ braintrust has acknowledged the ineptitude of our return game. Just wondering, though, if the main problem isn’t being overlooked (blocking schemes & execution) and if Hugh Charles shouldn’t have been given a good look before bringing someone else in.
Our napkin says the Riders are tied for 1st in the west after beating your Bombers. Could be hosting 3rd home playoff game in 3 years. :rockin: I think that hasn’t happened since the 70s. Some of us weren’t born then.
With limited rosters I wonder which is more important in the long run… to have a returner who call play receiver (or running back) at times, or to have a receiver/running back who can be a returner at times.
Eric Morris and Johnny Quinn did the jobs in college if I read correctly their college resumes. None were stellar, but they did the jobs. I think ET looks for receiver/running backs who can return rather than return specialists who can step in and play one of the two positions if needed. Which is more important is the big question.
It is has been a while since I have seen a defensive back who is also a good full time returner in the CFL … maybe someone can help me with my memory with that.
Armstead did a good job handling kick returns yesterday… his punt returns were just so-so … but then again, punt return yards are always far lower than kick returns. An average over 8 yards in punt returns is rather “stellar” I think… averaging 5 yards or so on punt returns is about par for the course I would think.
Just shy of 30, JA is showing all the naysayers he still has the wheels and even the smarts to "git er done"
JA was once a big part of the Riders offense, now back in Green this weaselly little fellow is playing like he is possessed, proving ALL his critics wrong........
I feel JA is the comeback player of the year.....not bad for being a washed up recycled "is this the best they could get" player.....eh!
