just listening to the SportsCage this morning and there’s rumors going around that Mueller is going to have Jake Maier with the team?
oh god I hope not… not the right move.

To me, not much difference between Jake Maier and Nick Arbuckle (the guy Maier beat out of a job in Calgary). Both guys are pocket passers first with average to limited mobility. Maier a bit younger if memory serves.
Before Arbuckle became a Grey Cup hero by destroying Canada’s team (WBB) he was essentially on the scrap heap. Maier might learn from this.
Mueller already on the case.
he has potential yes.
If Lyle B says it a good move then it is settled… Riders should NOT do this
I think he’s a serviceable #2. Just didn’t get the starter vibe off him very much. I don’t think he’s the leader of a team, but when the leader goes down he’ll finish a game for you…
Maier reminds me of Dane Evans. Great off of the bench but not starter material. I am not sure I want to use up a development space for someone that may not become a bonifide starter. I could be wrong though as QBs who have been on the discard pile have gone on to win GCs.
A year more of learning with Harris can’t do Jake any harm and he’s good insurance in case of injury.
Good points all around. Coaches have to put up with fans having hindsight…when then it ain’t 20/20 is it for fans.
Right…
Yep Lyle has a reputation to keep
As amusing as that is, I think its a good move. Calgary tried to make him a BLM clone and play that short drop ball out offence - which lead to a lot of interceptions.
Put him in the right offence (the Riders) where he gets a three step drop and time to make reads I think he’s better than a lot of people believe.
But so would any QB under those conditions 90 percent of the time
Dane Evans has a winning record as a starter.
I’m pretty sure arbuckle left Calgary as a free agent and signed a solid starter contract in Ottawa then got bumped when they hired Lapo for, yep, Matt Nichols. Traded to TO and nothing worked out for him since then until his right place right time “mvp” GC win. Calgary didn’t get rid of him they lost him in free agency.
Could an alright move, but I would stick with Patterson. I think we still need upgrade at receiver .
Except for Ryan Dinwiddie. He came off the bench after Kevin “Field Mouse” Glenn broke his arm in the Eastern Final vs. Toronto. Dinwiddie was absolute trash in the Grey Cup (his first pro start), especially when the Bombers were able to keep the score close into the 4th quarter. Dinwiddie showed no signs of the leadership qualities that were to come. He was a disaster as a CFL QB - today he’s one of (if not the best) head coach in the CFL.
Up for the Dinwiddie award:
I like Patterson as a person but he has been around the league for quite a while and several years with the Riders in particular. He had his shot to step up and show that he is a legitimate candidate for the starter position. I don’t feel he grabbed the bull by the horns and made good on this opportunity any better than Dolegala or Mason Fine did. I am not confident that Patterson still has further development potential. It is a rough business but we need to develop the next one over the upcoming 2 to 3 years. I remember Calvillo being hailed as a QB savior in Hamilton. He crashed and burned and it wasn’t until he spent a couple of years under Tracey Hamm to learn how to be a pro QB that he started to light up the league. This could be the same for Jake. A couple of year under Trevor may be just what he (and the Riders) need to mature into a quality QB. We know Trevor is a great mentor. VA is very frank that it was his time spent with Trevor that taught him the most about being a pro QB.
I would not at all be upset bringing Maier in as #2 with the thought of him replacing Trevor eventually once he has matured and learnt from Trevor for a couple of years.
Will the CFL be allowing QBs to use walkers in 2026?
Couldn’t resist
Legitimate jab (well played) and I would tend to agree that a few of the QBs may qualify for Old Age Security soon. Trevor is working very hard and may be able to play for '25 and '26. I am quite skeptical for anything longer even if he is using Tom Brady’s methodology for staying fit to play (worked for Tom as he won a Superbowl at 43). Is two years enough to work with Jake, only time will tell: that is if he even joins the Riders.
As long as Harris stays mentally sharp and physically healthy then i could see him go another five years.
Maier is currently better by a good margin than any of our backups. The player with the highest ceiling remains to be seen.
