Unfortunately, I held onto this story too long and The Spec beat me too it. Anyway, here is what Ivor Wynne's son Bob, had to say when I interviewed him last September.
It was a great honor to meet him. I should have talked to both sons as Teri did, but it was a pleasure to learn from the family none the less, what the name on the side of the stadium truly means.
I had a deep attchment to the strength of that name even before I knew what it stood for. I have an even deeper appreciation for it now.
I hope council chambers and the area outside is packed next monday(Thursday if the meeting is re-scheduled). This is it. I hope it's a time for Cats fans, Pan Am hopefuls, supporters of this latest plan, and even Ward 3 residents, to rejoice and celebrate a victory. There are some items in the plan I question, but I hope it all can be sorted out so there can be victory at the end of this long process.
I don't think it should continue as Ivor Wynne - this is not a slight against Ivor Wynne but the stadium was called Ivor Wynne for over 40 Years. That was a great tribute and an honour to have a stadium named after him for over 40 years, but time to move on and re-name a new stadium that will allow the Ticats to get some revenue from. I'm sure that in Regina there was some opposition when they dropped Taylor Field and became Mosaic but times change. If people feel strongly about it then name the practice field or another Park IW
It’ll be what it will be. Even the family themselves said the cities (and the Tiger-Cats for that matter), needs are their needs.
If there is a way to still encorporate it, the story was just my way of saying why it would be nice to carry it forward. As JFL pointed out, Saskatchewan found a way. Perhaps we can do.
All we can do is advocate why we would love to keep it, and the Cats/City will do in the end what they feel is best to make the stadium and the Cats work in Hamilton.
I’ll be happy with football still residing at 75 Balsam, but the name meant something to me even before I knew what it meant. Ivor Wynne. It’s strong like our stadium. Our Black and Gold. Like our pride.
Larry: Thanks for the link.
I think the article and historical significance of IWS should be required reading for every Hamilton City Councillor.
If IWS ends up being re-built it should be for positive reasons. Not by default or because it’s cheaper. It should be built because of pride in what the Hamilton Tiger-Cats have done for the city.
Those councillors and others who are more interested in “infrastructure” need to remember that can be done at any time…so deal with that problem separately. Play your games and push your agendas all you want with that. Just remember that not one dime of Fed and Prov stadium money will come for “infrastructure” if the stadium does not get built …so take the money and be proud it is being used for something that reflects the City’s history and will continue that legacy for future generations.
How much more appropriate could it be if Ivor Wynne’s memory and his pride in the Tiger-Cats provided the momentum
for the rebuilding of the stadium named after him.
Wow, what a great article about Ivor Wynne's sons. They both sound like outstanding, selfless, citizens much in the same way their late father was decades ago. It really is too bad that Ivor Wynne Sr. isn't around anymore since if he was I'm sure that this stadium situation would have gotten settled months ago
