Here is something for Bomber fans that was in the Calgary Sun today.
'I'm not in shape'
New Bombers back admits ...
By PAUL FRIESEN, SUN MEDIA
WINNIPEG -- Onterrio Smith wasn't far into his first workout with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers when it became apparent he is carrying even more baggage than anybody knew.
"I'm not in shape. I won't lie to you," the former NFL star said yesterday. "I've got a ways to go."
Smith, who's 5-ft. 10-in., figures he's lugging around 245 lb., not what you'd expect from a guy desperate to resurrect his career.
"My body will naturally get itself back into form," Smith said.
Bombers head coach Doug Berry must have thought somebody wandered out of a nearby McDonald's and onto the field by accident.
"He looked like he needs to practise," Berry said, carefully.
.....omg, this is not what the BBs need at this point.....how does a 5'10" 245lb body just 'naturally get back into form'.......
........can I ask a stupid question here?........did none of the BB scouts take a look at Smith before signing him?.....like a quick visit to his home to deliver papers to sign?......
Well, they'd better cut him if he doesn't GET into shape (I'm sure they would). It would be really pathetic to keep around an out-of-shape player just because he's an NFL star.
Good question R&W. 245 pounds, that's 31 pounds heavier than what he weighted when with the Vikings. The gain is huge. At least, the Bombers can brag about having 15% more of Onterio Smith !
I’m surprised at everyone reactions in regards to being 30 pounds over playing weight … Like, its not uncommon for a runningback to attend training camp 10 pounds over weight (in fact, some coaches request the extra weight knowing that’ll be burned off in the two-a-days) … Keith Tkachuk came into his training camp OVER 45 pounds over his typical playing weight … yet he was still the blues best player… Its not like Smith was a physical specimem in the NFL either … nor was he a star by any stretch of the imagination …
I thinks the press in Winnipeg just has nothing better to write about … I woudln’t sweat this …
.......from what I know about showing up to TC you are supposed to already be 'in shape', then TC gets you into 'hitting shape'......I also seem to recall Fat Keith being placed on the Blues suspended list until he dropped those Burger King pounds.......
Lets see if I have this straight, a lot of bomber fans are singing his praises, but yet he wasnt a star?? He shows up to camp 30 lbs overweight, yet you say its nothing to sweat about. Apparently , its Smith who is going to be doing a lot of the "sweating", trying to take off those extra lbs. It sounds like to me that the Bombers got an average player, who has gotten a lot of press for all the wrong reasons... good luck with him.
.......just shock I guess, we all heard Smith was a real catch.....and to be truthful I'm sure the other seven teams, of which we are fans of, were a little wary of what Smith could do, but based on this news it will be no big deal now.....might as well have signed Kirsty Allie.....
This is starting to remind me of an episode from the first season of "The Ultimate Fighter" where a guy had to "cut" a good 20 pounds within 26(?) hours in order to make weight for his fight. I can just picture Smith in training camp wearing a rubber suit and riding an exercise bike while being stuck in a sauna to drop this extra poundage.
