I met a Ticat fan today for the first time...

So here goes. I met Ray Emery and his lovely girlfriend Keshia Chanté today.

Ray is an NHL goaltender, and Keshia is a recording artist. I work with Rays grandfather, and today we visited the mansion they share in Mississauga. We were delivering a mattress. I work at a small mattress factory here in the Hammer, and George is friends with the owner. Though retired, well off and nearly 70, George has a strong work ethic and is young at heart. He works every Thurs and Friday for 4 hours each day for the last couple of years in sales. He likes to be there and obviously doesn't need the money. Ray paid off his mortgage renovated his house (he refused to move so Ray spent over $200000 renovating his house in east Hamilton) and bought him a brand new truck (F150 with all the bells and whistles).

Ray grew up near Hamilton. George (Ray calls him Papa) used to own a store at Center Mall that sold TiCat merchandise mainly, back when Neil Lumsden was in charge. George used to take Ray to games all the time when he was a kid. Ray is a TiCat fan and follows the CFL. He hasn't been to IWS in a long time, but interestingly enough, he flipped the coin at a game back when he was 11ish, George can't quite remember his exact age at the time.

When Ray played for Philly a couple years back, the Winter Classic was held in Boston. Though Ray was injured and not playing, he flew George down to watch the game. It was the first time George had met his teammates in Philly.

In all the pictures George brought back, he is wearing his favorite TiCat sweater. Every picture with every player. George told me one of the other players father recognized our logo and remarked to him, and I quote, "Ticats fan eh. You must hate Bettman."

Keshia Chanté was very down to earth and quite lovely. She signed a picture for my daughter for me from her Table Dancer album cover. She is a Juno winning Canadian artist. Ray didn't have to sign anything for me or Tanner, as George has already given me 2 signed Senators Jerseys and a few cards signed for both kids from when Ray played there.

Who knew Ray Emery was a Cats fan?

Reimer is a Peg fan I just see on TV.

Just after I made this post about meeting Ray. How ironic

I made a joke with Ray when I asked him where he's gonna play this year. He was elusive, I didn't press the matter but made a joke that he laughed at and so did Keshia.

I said, "Please just don't play for the Leafs. I'd hate to have to boo you."

judging by his public act she is perfectly believable

Great story. Thanks for that. 8)

(ps.......you write and tell a story very well and might have a future in it)

A photo go with the story:

Thanks Deerhunter! I appreciate the compliment.

@Blogskee: I don't know what happened to your post, but your source is probably correct. I know he began to develop an ego when he played in Ottawa that became so large it ultimately cost him his job.

George and I have talked at length about Ray and how much he has matured since being diagnosed with avascular necrosis in his hip. This is usually a career ending diagnosis, and has ended the career of many promising athletes. Bo Jackson was one.

At the time the Doctors told Ray that after surgery the chances of playing hockey at an elite level were slim.

From his Wikipedia page:

On February 7, 2011, Emery signed a one year, two-way contract with the Anaheim Ducks and led the Ducks into the playoffs, finishing tied for fourth in the league and posting a 7-2-0 record with 2.28 goals-against average (GAA) and .926 save percentage (SV%) in 10 regular season NHL appearances.[14][15]
