Who cares? It’s just a fun, light-hearted, silly way to show that you don’t like the other team … It’s not that disrespectful. If you said, “the Eskimos missed the playoffs because their name sounds like Deadmonton 'Shmoes”, THAT would be stupid. But, if you said “the 'shmoes missed the playoffs because they decided to blitz the Bombers on the last play of the game, and because they lost twice in a row to Hamilton”, then so what? It’s really not that big of a deal, is it?
Anyway, what would rile up an Edmonton player more - a Stamps player saying, “they’re the 'shmoes” or a Stamps player saying, “the Eskimos suck”?
It’s just a meaningless nickname. Last time I checked, this is what fans do.
The earliest games I can recall are the '77 Western Final where the Lions got thumped by Edmonton and the following week where Montreal beat Edmonton in the “staple gun” Grey Cup.
