How Bad is Rod Black?

I wonder what we consider to be the criteria for “good” and “bad” when it comes to sports commentators? All seem to follow the same format, a play by play and best employee monitoring software to guy who tells us what we are seeing, and a colour guy who tells us what we just saw. If we are lucky, the colour guy does a little in depth stuff that explains the “why” we saw what we just saw, but I find the casual fan doesn’t really appreciate that aspect.

Rod Black has a pleasant voice, a light approach, and passable banter with Duane Ford. He doesn’t get caught up in any particular annoying bromance with any particular player, nor does he seem to push a particular team as his favourite. He does have little quirks, like the Steve Tasker thing, and the nicknames thing, but, over-all I find him to be as acceptable as anyone else on the TSN slate. But then, I grew up with guys like Vince Mazda, Johnny Esaw and Pat Marsden.

I would agree with Bob Cole as a top broadcaster but not as a national broadcaster.

Jim Robson, Dan Kelly, Joe Bowen, Chris Cuthbert, Paul Romanuk should be ranked above Bob Cole but below Foster Hewitt and Danny Galvin.

Joe Bowen is the worst out that group. A unapologetic Leaf homer. I cringe everytime they play that "God Bless you, Boys" sound bite after the Leafs beat the Sharks in a long forgotten playoff series sometime in the 90's. They ought to sent him back to Sudbury

Fixation really. The guy is a disaster and kills the excitement of the game. Is Rod the answer for TSN to bring people to watch lol that is truly funny.

I am sure he is great doing other disciplines in sport but he is not great at football.
