HOLDING THE HAMMER

Lee & Coverenton were first overall picks; the older guys there were in the days of terrtiorial CFL draft picks - so first couple of rounds; O'Shea, Brown, Clermont and Radlein were all top 5 / 1st round picks.

Your knowledge of CFL history & talent is astounding. Obie should hire you as a draft consultant so you could tell him how to ignore or write off Canadian talent and help develop the only 7 NIs need apply "policy", er, "guideline".

All I’m saying is pick the guy who will be the best player long term. None of these guys are going to come in and dominate like rookies in the NFL do. And all the guys you mentioned did NOT put up unbelievable stats or did anything that a rookie import can’t.

OK I went and checked out previous drafts and it seems that there is an average of 2 impact players in each draft. 2! And it’s unbelievable at the number of first picks that were turned out to be nothing but career back ups.

And here is the biggest example of how a missed pick can hurt a team for an entire decade: in 98 we picked Fliezer first overal and with the sixth pick Montreal got Cahoon, so think about how that missed pick screwed this team long term. We missed out on a future hof receiver for a guy who couldn’t even compete at the CFL level, Cahoon could have lead to at least one more grey cup win. Also Ottawa passed on Clermont for 2 nobody’s.

In the CFL draft you can’t afford to pass on the best guy, because the gap between the best and the next guy is just so massive in these drafts.

There are many variables that affect a players career, and when thay get drafted,if they get drafted . Basically A player has to be on a good team, and stand out on that team to get noticed as a high draft pick, but there are lots of Good players who dont play on the best or good teams, this is where good scouting and a smart G.M come in to play. Who could have known that Cahoon would develop a Click with Cavilo?? F y i there is a Cahoon type S.L who was St Marry,s top reciever in the V.C. - from the Hammer. but he may not even get drafted.

The problem with somebody like you trying to discuss this topic in detail, is that you don’t know that much about CFL details - team rosters and all the players - you’ve heard of the stars like Cahoon, but everybody else is a “nobody” ( just FYI - Fliezer has played in the CFL for years and was one of Ottawa’s top D-linemen when he started there; the 2 “nobody’s” Ottawa drafted over Clermont are Gauthier who’s been a starting OT for years now including on the Bombers East champs team in last year’s GC, and Vilimek who has been a good fullback and special teams player - sure Clermont may have been the better pick, but these other guys have played & contributed very well in the CFL) - football is a team game in case you didn’t know, and there’s 24 starting positions on O & D plus special teamers and decent back-ups are needed too. If you think the games are decided by one superstar American who single-handedly wins championships with “massive” contributions, good for you - I’m sure Printers could be put out there by himself and win games. And FYI - every draft year in every sport (NHL, NFL, MLB, whatever) would contain examples of poor picks or busts or later round picks who out-played lots of guys picked before them, etc. Guess you’ve never figured that out though and your amazing anlaysis of CFL drafting leads to some fine conclusions.

Stick to commenting on the league’s superstars or spouting cliches you’ve been told by the experts.

Sorry but you and TC make no sense at all.
