Simon played three seasons with Scott Milanovich, Hamilton’s head coach, as his quarterback at the University of Maryland from 1993 through 1995. His best campaign as a Terrapin came with Milanovich throwing him the football in 1994 as he made 77 receptions for 891 yards and five touchdowns in 11 games.
Goveia is currently the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ senior assistant general manager and player personnel director. He’s helped the Blue and Gold reach five straight Grey Cups, winning two in 2019 and 2021.
The Burlington, Ont. native’s first job in the CFL came with the Toronto Argonauts in 2010 where he served multiple roles with the team, including running backs coach, Canadian scouting director, and player personnel director. He won a home Grey Cup in Toronto with Milanovich as head coach in 2012.
Goveia previously spent 15 years coaching in U Sports at Mount Allison University, McMaster University, and the University of British Columbia.
Maybe it was Danny’s choice. Re: my comment up-thread about having autonomy without Ownership interferance.
It’s interesting that, aside from Taman, none of the candidates that I have seen mentioned have ANY full-time experience as a team’s GM. Now, I’ all for the so-called “new blood” in leadership roles, but I DON’T want to see our new one being a mouthpiece/pawn for the PoFO, PoHSG, and Ownership.
My money’s on Goveia. I think it will come out that Danny Mac didn’t want to move full time. Though interesting that he was quoted as being interested.
There was also some noise about them being interested in a scenario where they both came. Is it possible that Goveia is the finalist for the GM role and if he comes McManus comes in some role reporting to Goveia?
That’s what I hope, but if DMac was still in the running, even for assistant, I think that would have been reported. I bet an announcement comes within the week.
No further details yet. I assume this means that we will hear who it is today. If this much has leaked I have to believe that the specifics aren’t far behind.
The club has signed another of its '24 draft picks.
6’3" / 225 lb 23 yr. old LB Mitchell Townsend was picked 70th overall, in the 8th round, out of UBC, and was among the final training camp cuts, here, last June. Two months later, he spent a couple of weeks with his home town team, in Vancouver, but has been a free agent, since. Townsend’s grandfather, Walt Bilicki, a ten season CFLer, was a LB on the B.C. Lions first ever Grey Cup championship team, which defeated the Tiger-Cats in the 1964 game. He’d, earlier, played as a Blue Bomber against Hamilton in the last three Grey Cup games of the '50’s, winning the last two.
