Halftime show next year - your choice performer?

It doesn’t matter who they have at half-time. There will be those that will love the artist[s] and there will be those that hate the artist[s]. Taste in music is a very personal choice. Bungle posted a couple of links. I listen for a brief time. The singer sound like he had swallowed 4o grit sandpaper. I couldn’t understand a word the guy was saying. He sounded like he was having a seizure. I lasted about 10 seconds with this guy and figured he could use a good enema. But that’s me. I’m not judging Bungle’s taste in music but I do believe there is music and there are artists out there that would satisfy everyone in the crowd. Why? Because certain music appeals to everyone. Some music is eternal.

We don’t have to go back to the 60s although a good deal of that music has still survived to today and is still very popular. Some of those artists can still entertain our socks off.

I’ve no idea how they come up with some of these entertainment groups but with some of them I wouldn’t take a CD if it were given to me. It’s just not my taste.

But here’s what I find interesting. My wife loves to watch The Voice and America’s Got Talent. Both of these programs have turned out singing talent that has been phenomenal. In fact talent that is better than some so called “talented” artists that have made it in the music world. I’m wondering why the CFL has not scouted out some of this talent and booked them.

What is even more interesting is that while some here poo poo the artists of the 60s and 70s, it is not just the baby boomer generation that loves these singers. Their kids love 'em too. And yes, even some of their grandkids get off on the music.

There are vocal impersonators as well that do an excellent rendition of the Beatles, Neil Diamond and others.

For the record there were two Grey Cup half-time intermissions that stood out for me…so much so that I still remember them today: The Guess Who [2000] and Shania Twain [2002]

Quick costume changes between songs to go from skinny Elvis to older fat Elvis. Maybe Johnny Cash. Or Curt Kobain. Or if we dare to think bigger…yes, you know where this is headed, let’s all say it together - 3D HOLOGRAPHIC WHITNEY HOUSTON! LOL.

I have no issue with the half time shows. They are what they are, you’ll either like em or not. There’s no way you’ll please every subset of fan every year. Other than the one year they had the Black Eyed Peas, they tended to showcase Canadian talent. I think unless its a uber star they should keep with a mix of a couple acts, like they did for the 100th Grey Cup. Speaking of which, the halftime selection committee, through their meticulous process, managed to unite millions of Canadians in the member of Justin Bieber being booed at the 100th Grey Cup. How could that not be a good thing? The only rules should be the selections performed should be up beat to maintain the energy of the event and no slow ballads, especially important in colder outdoor venues, and the bands should include some local flavour if possible, IMO anyways.

People seem fed up with the old rockers and all the fabulous music they can offer and older guys like myself can’t stand a lot of the no-talent dance crap they try to push nowadays, so I thought how about a modern rock group. The best I can think of is “Big Sugar.” Great music and Canadian.

Big Sugar is excellent no question. Going to see Moist in London tonight. I bit too "out there" rock of the 90's and David Usher maybe isn't exactly what you'd call a tough looking football type and some of his lyrics are bit weird but the old Moist music is excellent.

Beagle, I totally agree that everyone has their own tastes. I think most people complaining made their decision on what they thought of the halftime show as soon as it was announced. I enjoy the 60’s music bands as much as the next person, but they have been done to death for Grey Cups, at least the Canadian bands. I was at Edmonton for the Shania halftime show. I have heard alot of people state that was a great show. Problem is like a lot of pop bands, she sang along with a pre- recorded track. It was so obvious the other people in the section I was in, were asking if she was just lip syncing. I just think its a halftime show, you either like it or don’t. If you don’t mute the volume or go have a bio break.

Good post Wolfman44. Just let me clarify something. While I enjoy the '60s music I’m not suggesting that it is either '60s music or bust. I also enjoy later music especially when sung by what I consider “good” artists. I loathe certain types of music like: rap, punk rock and heavy metal music and some of this other stuff that sounds like the artists are having their vocal cords ripped out of their throats. I’m adverse to listening to certain “artists” as much as some are to listening to Twain or Diamond. Twain as some already know didn’t arrive on the scene until the early 1990s!

There are lots of contemporary male and female artists that I quite enjoy. Nothing 60s about them.
Mute it out if I don’t like it? Hard to do if I’m at the Grey Cup game and don’t want to fight the crowds in the concourse.

What I would be interested in seeing is an accurate demographic analysis showing the concentration of ages of those attending the Grey Cup game. If the main age range of those attending the Grey Cup is in the 20-30 age range then I can understand bringing in a group that caters to that age group. If bringing in these so called “hot” bands or artists is to hook the younger fans I think that needs to be reviewed.

Money no doubt plays a factor and maybe the organizers will pay only so much regardless of entertainment. Also does the entertainment have to be music singer/artists? Perhaps exploring some other type of entertainment that would appeal to a broader age range could be looked at.

I would not be adverse to seeing The Stampeders play at the Grey Cup. There is the obvious intended pun there but all kidding aside, they would be a great choice for a half time show. They still tour, albeit the casino circuit. I would love to see them try to please the old crowd for a change. The last great Grey Cup Half Time show in my opinion was Trooper, The Stampeders would rock B.C. Place.

Part of the entertainment in B.C. Place is the "Kiss Cam". Look it up if you're not sure what it is about.
This got me to thinking…. For part of the half-time show there could be a little culture added…as in Saskatchewan Roughrider fan culture.
