It all comes down to wins. Get wins he is fine. If this team is les than 3 wins by ld. …yeah…he is likely toast. He chose to reinvent the coaching staff…it was a win on o but total bust on d. In the words of CC…it is potentially his cross. Had the team not lost games by blowing it late he is likely fine and it is written off to iinjuries. The problem is the d…CC is the DC

Yes if the team had won the Argo game and the even the 1st Lion’s game and sat 2 - 2 this conversation probably wouldn’t be happening. As depop says it would be attributed to injuries most likely. That isn’t the case though and having blown the lead in the two preseason games and the first three of the season. Well there’s bound to be unhappy campers in RIderville.
As far as the Gary Lawless report. It is just rumblings that are going around and no I don’t think he has an inside source ( but you never know) as to what exactly if anything will happen. It’s his job to go after the scent of a possible story and the more it reeks the better his ratings As Don Henly sings “give us dirty laundry” is playing in the background.
There usually is fire where there’s smoke so no doubt there is something in the air. What exactly it is though I think is anyone’s guess.
As depop also mentioned the changes to staff and to some of their responsibilities well that is on Cory as he made it very clear he wanted to run the whole show. Firing Hall and Cortez and bringing in his guys means it’s his glory if things went well but also his neck in the noose if they don’t. I would say he is 50-50 in that dept as Chappy has done enough on offense to get the wins, even though there are a few issues he could clean up too, but its on the defensive side of things that has not gone well. Look at our sack total just for an indicator. Last year we had probably about 12 or more and this year I thinks its a grand total of two. Look at the turn overs created by the D this year. One pick and one on downs. Look at the rankings of our offense vs our defense. Were first in almost every category on O and almost if not last in every category on D.
This done not reflect well on the guy that said he is running the ship when it comes to the defense. Right now the ship is hardly staying afloat and they better start getting all the paddles in the water or they are headed down s*** creek in a hurry.
The report of Chamblin being fired and replaced by LaPo by the LDC comes from another article by Kirk Penton in the Sun under annonymous rumblings from insiders around the CFL.
The only reason I see right now that any move would be made would be from fan pressure. The record not withstanding, they haven’t exactly been terrible on the field. There were two losses to the Oline from last year where they are still adjusting. Losing Durant was huge too because this team historically has not been able to win much when he’s been out injured. Changes take time. The biggest issue I would have if I was a fan was the decision to kneel down and run out the regular time in BC to send it to OT. Tim Burke did that here when the Bombers had a big lead at home and the Esks came from behind. I’m not a fan of conceding like that when your team is on your heels and needs something to turn the momentum around a bit.
IMO, and I’m not trying to be a troll, but IF a move was to be made I would sooner see Taman moved if I was a Rider fan. He’s heading down the same path he was with Winnipeg in that he bogs down the team under the cap with too many nice deals for the veterans which can sacrifice the quality in the depth spots. A different GM may be able to impact the team midseason with a couple of player moves quicker than a new coach who would be trying to implement new systems. Leave any decision on Chamblin until the offseason IMO.
The O has been great, even with the losses. That is not an area of concern. It is the D. Put any other teams D on our team and we would be at minimum 3-1 if not 4-0. Our D ranks last in pretty much every defensive category.
I don’t disagree, I meant it as an example of some transition the team has had to go through on the field. I probably could’ve used a more relevant example, such as some of the early injury issues on D so far this year.
That’s something that virtually every team has had to go through and does pretty much every year. Other teams this year seem to be up to that challenge, ours, not so much.
Could see it, but wouldn’t see it until season end / if they miss the playoffs while hosting it. They are sitting kinda like the Riders…Bombers have 2nd highest scoring team and 2nd worst D…difference is they are 2 and 2, so it is pretty unlikely they are looking to make a potentially immediate move. Lapo may or may not look at the Bombers as a viable option for himself after he was tanked and was really the best thing they had going for them at the time.
It would probably take some pretty big coaxing and guarantees on the bomber’s part to get Lapo to consider sticking his noise in there after being given the heave ho even though it was the Gm’s fault and not Lapo’s. Lapo was made the scapegoat though and I’m sure he hasn’t just swept that under the rug.
I would think Ottawa or the Riders would be the most likely candidates to seriously look at. Ottawa started all right but now have dropped two in a row and in both looked pretty bad doing it. There has been some mumblings that if the red blacks start to go on a skid then the HC could easily be turfed. We all know the situation as far as the Riders go.
So now Lawless is saying the Riders should fire Cory and bring in Benevidies as the HC. First he says they should bring Benevidies in as the DC but then comes out he should be the new HC.
That is my biggest fear of bringing him in at all. How easy would it be to have him step in as the DC and then axe Cory and make him both DC and HC. I would think after his performance as both in BC that would set off all kinds of alarms. DC? I could possibly not yak up my lunch at but to make him HC and whoever gives that the green light should be shot hung and pied on in that order, and for good measure shot and pied on again.
I think with the Chamblin experiment as both HC and DC this team's management would be absolute morons to even think of trying a move like this. Bring in Lapo as the HC? Fine. Bring in Benividies as the DC? Well sort of all right but I would hope I'm not the only that thinks this would be a complete suicide move by management to make him both .
Look at the Lions success with him running the whole show. Sorry we do not want or need another knee jerk fix that only ends up costing the team yet more money and time only to get the same or worse results. If they are going to do a HC change take the next couple of weeks and look at all the potential candidates out there. Personally I think Lapo is tailor made to step in and iron things out. He has history with the team and knows the pressure and expectations of this team are with this fan base. Personally I don't think Benevidies could handle being under the microscope and the barrage of media attention he would get. Face it the Lions on a good game draw maybe 28,000 and that is a pretty good day for them, while the Riders are not unknown to go 31,000 +. Then there is all the non game day attention to go along with that. Being cornered by a fan at a restaurant that starts to heckle him about something . Like I say I think he would fold like a cheap suit under this kind of scrutiny. I say don't even think about giving him the HC job. Fans may vote with their wallets if the Riders do make a change and it turns out to be no better or as I said even worse.
Interim HC (if needed...from what I have heard one of the potential leading candidates is available) just go with Chaps and have have Dyce help out with O...leaving Cory McDiarmid looking after ST
It’s really only the defence that needs fixing. I thought special teams had their best game by far. They limited Banks to pretty much nothing on returns, he averaged 7 yards on 5 returns (got 28 of those yards on one return, the other 4 he got 7 total yards).
I really don’t think Lawless has any clue on this, he’s based out of Winnipeg, he’s just throwing names at a board.
Do you think Benevides would come as long as CC is head coach? Didn’t Benevides turn down the DC job even though he was unemployed? I thought I read something or heard something at one point… I think it might become a clash of defensive philosophies wouldn’t it?
F**k Gary Lawless. What does he know about coaching? And what does anything any writer says have to do with anything that happens in the room at practice or on the field on game day?
Any coaching change made NOW (and by now I mean at least before Labour Day) would be made for one reason only: to stop a losing skid. We all saw how effective that was when Miller stepped in for Marshall. It stopped the skid for a couple of weeks, but down the stretch they were an even WORSE team.
Blowing things up now will only do damage. If you want to make a change, make it for the right reasons. ALL of the following must be in place:
1 - You do not like the direction that the team is going long term (emphasis LONG).
2 - You know which direction you actually want to go.
3 - You have a plan to get there.
When all of these things are in place THEN you pull the trigger.
Right now NONE of these things are in place, even for point 1 a strong case can be made that long term looks good.
Anyone out there who wants a GM and/or HC change right now is only panicking to stop a short term losing skid. It’s cutting off your leg to save your foot.
I have mentioned in other posts that I feel this team has until the bye week to turn the season around or else… The record and how the team plays over the next 2 games will ultimately help determine a direction. It also gives the upper brass an opportunity to buy a couple more weeks time to figure out what is best for the organization moving forward
So, If this team is 0 - 7 at the bye and shows no signs of improving, a message needs to be sent. A message that you can’t just expect wins to miraculously happen by doing the same things over and over and expecting different results. Cory is to blame for being stubborn and not adapting his schemes to suit players strengths. Taman is to blame for not putting pressure on Cory to figure out the entire DC/HC thing and that currently his duel role is not working.
Now, I don’t think you need to fire both CC and Taman, but one has to go. It has been suggested on this board that Taman and CC are joined at the hip… that CC has heavily influenced Taman on the players that should be brought in to play his system. What I see is our overall Canadian talent being depleted (and or getting older), our international talent getting older, Canadian draft picks being traded for International players and a scouting department that seems to be struggling to replenish the pipeline…
So IMO, the guy that should be fired would have to be Taman. He is supposed to be the boss in charge of all these things that I see becoming big issues going forward. And I also feel that he is too close to Cory to turn the heat up on him… It is like admitting defeat because Cory was his guy from the start…
My other reasoning for Taman is that O’Day could just fill in nicely as interim GM for the time being without having too big of a disruption to the day to day operations of the team. Then the remainder of the season could become an evaluation until the upper brass figures out the future direction of the team and implement their changes
I give Taman credit for doing what he did to bring the Grey Cup home in 2013. He sold some of the future to win in the present and I’m fine with that. I just don’t think Taman has the vision or the skillset to build the future through youth… I think a lot of his moves are very short sighted, and he doesn’t think 3 or 4 moves out
I could be wrong though… It is just my opinion as a fan.
I agree with this, and to expand on the bolded…BT has said he wanted to get younger but CC likes his vets and pushed for those guys…so we know who the boss is. Need a GM who realises he is the boss and has a set and a coach that doesn’t reinvent the system after devloping players, especially Nationals (ie Foley out and dead depth there now, not finding a spot for AP yet keeping Williams who doesnt play yet is 46d)
lawless just wants the riders to go downhill, then they will pick up chamblin. i here winnipeg fans are up in arms about taman doing so good all of a sudden since he came to the riders , they just can't handle that we improved and they aren't. cory is a proven winner and we don't need to start the revolving door again here . that is just what other teams in the league would like to see us go down. because . WE don't need to win . OUR FANS WILL SUPPORT THE TEAM ANYWAYS >
it is coming from a LOT more than the Lawless source…and TSN doesn’t post stuff about their CFL partner w/o there being some merit. CC messed up pretty hard, and it goes beyond wins and losses
The guy is F*****ing 1 - 16 in has last 17 games as head coach. What about that tells you he is a proven winner??? And don’t go to the Grey Cup thing cause that ship sailed a long time ago. I could have coached that veteran laiden, O and D co-ordinated to the max team to the cup. 1 - 16? A proven winner??? Tell me you’re joking around.
