Some signs of life from a Canadian golfer. Corey Conners tied for 2nd after the first round at Bay Hill.
Conners finished a great tournament,
The Arnold Palmer in Florida
3rd place paying $1.4M and collecting 350 FEDEX points
Honourable mentions
Mack Hughes T 22nd, $178K and 40 Fedex points
Nick Taylor T31st, $126K and 30 points
Henley was just plain lucky yesterday, no way around it.
That putt that took him to the lead would have ended up in the pond it was cooking along so fast.
Conners said he struggled with pace on the greens all day. He didnât say it in as few words but it would seem the watering the night before changed the pace enough he struggled all day.
It appears that the PGA Tour may be leaning towards publishing pace of play data that has been tracked by Shotlink for some time. They should. The Tour is secretive enough, being one of the few sports organizations that still shroud their discipline process in secrecy, a big no no as far as fairness is concerned. Itâs not like the players have a tough job- probably easier than any athlete I can think of. Most players want to see this as do the fans. Any good golfer will tell you that the worst thing about playing golf is playing with a slow player- it doesnât matter how good of a golfer they are.
Good idea! Who was the Asian-American tour player that took interminably long times to finally hit his shots?
Also, on the womenâs tour - Brooke Henderson and her sister Brittany take huge chunks of time with their âShot Discussion Seminarsâ prior to just about every shot. Indecision, fear & doubt have come upon the greatest Canadian female tour player in modern history. Not even 27, I think Brookeâs days in the Top 20 are pretty much over.
Seven Canadians in the field this year for the Playerâs. Probably a record, but one with an asterisk. This tourny for many years had the best field of the year and although it no longer does, it still has a formidable PGA Tour field. Weâll see how we do. Stephen Ames is the only Canadian ever to win this tourny.
Which Canadian has the asterisk?
Probably more than one. Itâs the record 7 that has the asterisk as there wouldnât be 7 Canadians in the field if the best golfers in the world could all play as used to be the case.
Why do you bother following then?
It is what it is
Itâs on the players that have chosen the wrong Tour to play in for the easy money and easy schedule
The Canadians that are in the PGA have earned their Tour card whether you like it or not
Please donât turn this into a LIV vs PGA argument. You should know by now that I am a huge proponent of assimilating the tours. I am not taking sides but just stating facts when I point out that there are no more tournaments that pit the best golfers in the world head to head, with the majors being the closest, and that this tournamenmt used to have the best field of the year, but doesnât any more.
Your comment about why I bother following is inappropriate in my view and seems like it comes from a place of hurt. I long for the days of best on best golf, but wonât pretend we have it on either tour and wonât stop pointing out that fact until matters are resolved. I expressly started this thread to avoid LIV vs PGA talk, but that doesnât mean we should suspend reality and that the only golfers worth following or talking about are PGA Tour golfers. I follow both circuits and enjoy watching all of the best golfers in the world. I just wish they could play each other as used to be the case and isnât the case at present.
I strongly support the Canadians in the PGA and what they have accomplished
You seem to trivialise those accomplishments and support those that joined the 3 round/no cut Trump circuit chasing the easy $$$
Wasnât I the one who posted earlier today about the Canadians in the field of the Playerâs Championship? I always support the Canadians and frequently make Canadian related posts as you do as well. Are you saying that if one of the top Canadians joined LIV that you would no longer support them? I am not of that position. I merely pointed out that there wouldnât be a ârecordâ number of Canadians in the tournament if there was only one tour, something that was overlooked in the article.
I just like to see the best golfers in the world play each other and neither of the tours has all of the best golfers in the world playing on it unfortunately. I still like golfers on both tours and especially the Canadians, but letâs face it, the present era carries with it an asterisk and will until there is reunification. Even Schefflerâs accomplishments canât be compared to the past as it didnât come against the best and I also donât take the position that those that win on the LIV tour, such as Rahm last year, won against the best.
As in all sports,
You play and win or lose against the team/player in front of you on any given day
Definitely, but you canât compare yourself to the past or the best if you donât beat the best.
I would say the rift in golf has divided the talent much more than other rival leagues such as the WHA, ABA and AFL did in the past. There are just many more top players that have joined the new tour than say one Bobby Hull and also golf is an individual rather than team game.
My best guesstimate is that the PGA Tour has 75% of the best players in the world while LIV has 25%. Thatâs not a scientific analysis, and I donât know how you do one of those. It does make sense to me as one LIV player wins a major each year so that is 25% of major wins for LIV without even having close to 25% of the players in the field. I would say that the majors probably have about 85% of the best golfers in them currently as many worthy major participants from LIV have no way into the field at majors, no matter how wel they are playing.
We badly need a reunification.
Totally agree
As long as it is 4 rounds with a cut
It wonât be that simple and even the PGA Tour now has many tournaments that are not 4 rounds with a cut or like last week, just a small haircut in a small field. It is starting to approach half or even more than half for the top players so I think you will need to get used to that. There might even be more team play, which apparently the young people love and we know that the Ryder and Presidentâs Cups are big. I will have to see what it looks like, but I think more team play appeals to me personally and is also much bigger outside North America. We also have that junky (to me) hit into a screen league of Tiger and Rory that is team play. Weâll see. However it turns out to me having the best on best is the most important.
