Golf Season 2025

Pendrith had an amazing round, firing off a 62 Saturday. Predicting he returns to his old tricks on Satanic Sunday (for Canucks, anyways) and produces a 72.
Nick will be Top Canuck - I suspect he’ll wander in somewhere between 6th and 10th, never contending for the title.
Its all on Tommy Mullett (Fleetwood) today. He’s 3 shots clear of the field but has a penchant for falling back into the field when leading, just falling short. I suspect he’ll perservere today and contend to the end.
Scotty went crooked yesterday, looks like he played himself off title contention.

Scheffler is paired up with Pendrith today
Tee off in about half an hour

I suspect Scotty will fire off a 64 to 67 today and be on the leaderboard as dusk approaches. He could even win it if enough guys collapse. . . . . . just like the days when monsters like Golden Bear and Tiger roamed the land.

Fleetwood has a healthy lead and guys like Taylor and Scheffler are way too far back. I predict he will finally get his first PGA Tour win today.

Tommy Fleetwood with an awful start - 2 boogers in his first 3 holes. At this rate he might not even make Top 5. Imagine that? Henley and Bradley appear to be at the top of their game. Jason Day almost as unpredictable as Fleetwood. Those are pretty much the lot from which the winner will emerge - unless Scotty burns in a 29 on the back side.

Although I had predicted Fleetwood would win his first PGA tournament, he choked on 18 and Bradley made birdie to win by one. No Canadians threatened or were even close.

Bradley threatening to be playing captain at Ryder Cup. Bad Idea Jeans. Not because he might not be qualified to play, but because being captain is a full time job. He says he would do both if he played and not hand the reins over to one of his assistants. I do think that naming Bradley captain at 39 and while he is still playing well was a foolish move by the PGA. Clearly Mickelson has done more for the PGA for decades than any other golfer and has played in the most Ryder Cups, although he has been shut out because of apartheid. The article below also updates the current Ryder Cup standings with name recognition pretty weak outside the top 7. Miraculously Dechambeau is #5 with points availble to him only 4 times per year. In reality he is the clear #2 and if they drop him because he slides out of the automatic top 6 I will not watch.

Minjee Lee wins her 3rd major on the weekend. Brooke tied for 36th at +10 and still in quite the slump for Canada’s best golfer ever.

Here’s a nice story. Canadian Myles Creighton, whom I know zero about, wins his first Korn Ferry Tour event after carding a 59 on Saturday. I was actually pleasantly surprised by the size of the crowd at 18 when he sunk his winning putt. Love the propeller he received as a trophy.

If you’re interested our own Bob Weeks interviews the man:

Saw limited Golf Channel coverage of this event. I think Brooke was on once, tapping in for boogey after missing a 3 foot par putt. Brooke, at only 28 might be burned out from pro golf. Great early start for this self-made champion but her results of recent are of two types - paltry & paltrier.
I was wrong about Pendrith and apologize. After his fierce 62 on Saturday I had him down for a 72 Sunday. He went 71 - so he beat me by a stroke. Good for him.
Nick Taylor, as predicted was top canuck. Taylor will also be top canuck at the British Open, might be the only Canuck who makes the cut.
I like Tommy but too many choke jobs. calling him Tommy Deadwood from this point on - or until he wins.
As for Keegan - his nervous, agitative demeanor reminds me of Troy Westwood, the feisty Canadian kicker who toiled for the Bombers a couple decades ago. I think USA & England should re-negotiate the rules. Let them each draft a 12 person team but let the captains play in up to 2 select rounds. Only problem with that is if one team has a truly retired captain (like Tom Watson or Tiger) that captain would not be at all useful, even in a quick relief appearance. I still like the idea - cuz it gives Bradley a couple opportunities to insert himself for a slumping player or to pick up a flagging team.

More on Fleetwood’s near misses and inability to win:

A follow up on Myles Creighton as well as other Canadians on tours around the world this week. Last week Creighton actually had a hole in one, shot a 59 and won his first Korn Ferry Tour event. I am willing to bet that trifecta is a first on any tour.

Three Canadians playing in the Senior US Open, a major, this week, including the unfortunately named Dave Bunker. No word on whether he is a relative of Archie.

A PGA Tour weekly update including a focus on the tour’s Signature or LIV like events. It appears that no one out of the upper echelon is winning these tournaments. Also changes to British open qualifying.

As the PGA Tour continues to move towards the LIV model with more signature events and no cut events and less players in a tournament, here is a good explanation by Bob Weeks of what the new rules mean for playing privileges next year and where the Canadians stand,

Bob Weeks tells us why Adam Hadwin is in tough this year and unlikely to retain his tour card barring a miracle finsih to his year.

This begs the question… if he gets his miracle finish, does a security guard tackle him while he’s celebrating?

Hadwin has essentially become irrelevant to the question of Top Canadian pro golfers. He’s dormant and rarely puts two good rounds together let alone three or four. Same situation with Brookie Henderson, although Henderson has cobbled together a Hall of Fame LPGA resume.
I can see both Hadwin and Brooke serving as golf commentators within the next 2 or 3 years. Hadwin is a natural talker. Brook far more reticient but prolly capable of entering the announce circles. Dotty Pepper is nearly ready to retire and the other “toothy young” gal on the desk isn’t very good tbh.

At 27 I doubt commentating is in Brookes future anytime soon

One take on the top 25 choices to win the Open this week. Five of the top fifteen are LIV players. Corey Conners the only Canadian on the list at #20.

The last tournament this year I will probably be interested in and the last one with close to a best available field, although not. I will try to get up early Saturday and Sunday to watch some of it.

Bit of an odd take from Scheffler on the importance of winning. Not unlike McIlroy after completing the career Grand Slam. Certainly players such as Tiger, Phil and Jack had a different approach. I guess it’s pretty hard for us mortals to put ourselves in their places, although I assumed the unrelenting drive to win would always be there in a top athlete.
