since glieberman only owns 51% of the Gades, he prolly only wants to pay 51% of the losses...51% is about $2.55 million
smith, who owns 49%, doesnt want to pay his share of the losses ( about 2.45 million. )...so i think the CFL will assume control of smiths 49%, each of the other 8 teams will have to pay about $310 000 to keep the Gades alive for the '06 season.
maybe, if CFL can sell the 49% ownership it will have taken from Smith, Glieb will stay on for a few more years....i think when smith refused to pay his 49% of losses, glieb didnt feel he should be responsible for 100% of the losses when he only owns 51% of the team....i dont blame him...i blame Smith!
There is no team for maritimers to overwhelmingly support, yet they sold the 11000 available seats pretty quickly. Even with the Renegades problems, I expect another good response. Right now, any two CFL teams could play an exhibition game in Halifax and be well supported. I am not sure that can be said for any of the other expansion contenders.
Quebec City seems to make sense. A stadium can always be expanded later if the demand is there. I'd rather give the team to a community who WANTS it and will support it. I think another team in QC will score some cultural points for national unity as well.
The other point about travel is a good one. Makes a bridge towards an eventual Atlantic club.
When Glieberman bought the team, the deal he had with Smith was as follow:
Comes the end of the fiscal year, Smith has the choice between paying his part of the losses (49% of overall loss) OR let Glieberman assume a part (if not all) of his 49%, which would dilute his ownership of the team accordingly.
So basically, Smith could forfeit his ownership by not paying a cent. Glieberman would then own nearly 100% of the team, but would have to pay for the whole loss. But now that the red ink has flowed, Glieb doesn’t seem to like that deal anymore.
My take would be this: If the league has to fund part of the losses, then it should become an owner accordingly. So when the team would be sold to another owner, the league would get its money back.
...........and if the other eight CFl 'Owners' have to buck up the money to float the club then the Gades should be obliged to lose all their away games at least.......their home games they can try to win.......but all road losses in their Owner's other buildings........
Its in the other CFL owners' interest to float the Gades. It devalues the league as a whole when one franchise goes down. As I mentioned before, the CFL is on an upswing and folding a franchise could badly damage its newfournd credibility.
The revenues generated from Frank Clair should go the Gades to keep alive. One day this will all be a bad memory and this league will be ultra strong and popular with ALL Canadians
Maybe float the team in Ottawa for 1 more year …meanwhile get those bulldozers busy in QC or Halifax…
Trouble is, how much will the other teams have to “float” Ottawa? Some other post topics have had passionate fans of the game with mixed feelings on bailling out Ottawa. Perhaps if the Gliebermans were given the boot and the league ran Ottawa, it might be more palatable.
The thought of boosting my tickets prices to give money to Loonie’s Daddy is really hard to stomach!
glieberman has a kazillion $…the guy builds entire communities throughout the USA (Crosswinds Communities)…the gades losses are a spit in the bucket, probably what he drops on drycleaning each month…screw you glieberman, you crooked sack of crap…the sooner he is out of the CFL the better…
Let the team run the Gades! Isn't the league part of the reason that we're in this mess in the first place? Is there a rule against Bob Young owning the Cats and the Gades? The Ti-cats have half of the Gades players and coaches so why not own both teams? It could be like a collective where the best aspects of each team are evenly split between Ottawa and Hamilton! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If Ottawa wont support their team and Ville de Quebec wants them I am all for it.
