The problem is that there are only so many reps in practice, particularly with the limits on practices per week. If you put a package in for Alexander, you are taking valuable practice time away from Davis. IMO it’s important for the backup QB to get as many reps as possible in these situational packages so he can come off the bench and execute them properly (think about the debacle of Adams botching that play, coming in stone cold off the bench).
The first and foremost goal of these packages is to help us win games. If and when we win and Davis is comfortable running those plays, we can think about inserting Alexander in those same situations.
Yeah it takes a lot of reps to get a single new play right.
I watched the Lions put in the direct snap to Andrew Harris on a sweep back a few years.. They spent a LOT of time on that. I was surprised that they allowed fans to watch. It was in training camp.
He’s seeing playing time, just in short yardage situations, where he seems to be doing a solid job. As far as getting a starter job again, someone, most likely Callender, will have to screw up for a few games before they consider going back to him, I think. Just my opinion, though.
