Free Agent QB's in 2025

So there are a few QB’s who are free agents before the 2025 season.

Masoli - Ott
MTB - Edm
Harris - Sask
Ford - Edm
Alexander - Mtl

Now Technically Adams is not a FA in 2025 but he won’t be in BC for that season…

of the list, including Adams, where do you think they’ll play for next season?

Masoli, Harris and Alexander imo are likely to be the most sought after FA’s. they have the highest potential to be successful as a starter.

I think MTB won’t be playing football in 2025, with his salary expectations and age.

Saskatchewan I think will attempt to re-sign Harris but for less money… but I think they need to find a QB who can be #1 and has a lot of years ahead of him rather than perhaps 1 or 2 more.

Will Calgary look elsewhere than Maier? maybe Alexander from Montreal could be the future of Calgary? does Dickenson have the ability to change at the QB position?

Adams will be somewhere… I’m really believing that Adams will be in Edmonton in 2025 as their #1. every team in the East has an established QB…

only BC and Winnipeg have a definite confirmed starter… although Sask will try to re-sign Harris, i’m sure. so I guess it depends if he’ll take less?

your thoughts?

Hard to say at this point but…

Calgary just signed PJ Walker to a healthy contract so they may be less likely to buy on the open market, as they are always reluctant to do in the first place.

I’m thinking that MBT and Masoli are too old and in the latter’s case too devastated by injury. Masoli could be signed, even by Ottawa, for a minimal contract as a back up.

Alexander will probably be Dru Browned out of Montreal if the Als don’t make him their starter. If they do then Fajardo will likely be available even though he has a year left in his contract. Cody didn’t exactly get a vote of confidence after this weekend ‘s game.

MBT is a great CFL QB, even in UFL had great games, but I think it’s time to step aside and make room for future generations, besides the salary he’s getting, I’d like the Elks to give Malik Henry (the QB) a chance now, I have an affinity for the guy since I saw him at Last Chance U and then following him in Indoor Football.

I would like to continue watching Alexander and Maier, I think they had very good moments, I hope they get a space.

I think Masoli will be a backup. Montreal may find a way to bring back Alexander as a backup with an increased salary on a 1 year deal. (Similar to how Hamilton made Masoli/Evans work for a couple years).

I think Harris is back in Sask and Ford is back in EDM.

Adams is the wild card.

Scratch MBT off that list. As I understood it - his deal was for big cash, one year only, contingent on getting guys he wanted for the offence.

The only way that the Bombers would grab one of these guys is if Zach was to suddenly retire for ‘family reasons’ due to his many concussion incidents.

But if he DID retire I have to believe that either Harris or Alexander would be the best fit for our offense. Putting MacBeth on the same field with O’Shea would cause both beards to cancel each other out in a flash of pure energy that would destroy the known universe.

I think Sask has to make a move. Harris was very good this year but at 38 or 39 signing him to big money is a risk. It would be different if the last two years he took the club to the GC and was mostly healthy (like Zach as an example) but he’s barely played a full season over two years. If he’s willing to play at a reduced salary as a 1a 1b QB rhen I think it makes sense to bring him back. That said I don’t think his injuries are age related and he’s in amazing shape and returned healthy so maybe he’s a unicorn and can play until he’s 40. Very rare, obviously.

Then, who’s the other 1? I thought Patterson played well so there is potential. But I’d like to see them go after someone with more talent. Alexander is going to get a lot of off season attention as he went 4-0 and looked real good. But is he ready to be QB1? Many fail when thrown into the fire. Another year under a vet like Harris may be just what he needs and a chance to start or play roughly half the season might be the right thing for him.

If not Alexander then I’d like o see Ford. But, I think both will get an opportunity to start somewhere and my scenario won’t happen. If Sask gets either I hope it’s with Harris.

Adams deserves to start for a team that’s committed to him. Wherever he lands I hope it works out.

MBT… eh, whatevs. I’ll miss his very open and transparent interviews though

Masoli, I hope he can play backup for Ottawa. Or transition into a coaching role if that’s right for him.

And look at where that has gotten them the last two seasons.

I think PJ Walker will turn out to be an excellent starting QB in the CFL.

But, remember, I’m the same guy who predicted great things for Joey Elliott, Rocky Butler, and Stanley Jackson.

He also has 16 interceptions vs only 6 TD’s as an NFL QB. The extra man up here might make that ratio even worse.

And then he will rank up (or down) there with Elliott, Butler, and Jackson !!

well, with Alexander just signing an extension through 2027, he’s not going anywhere. But… will they trade Fajardo?

Maybe time for masoli,MBT and maybe harris to retire.

Masoli for sure. I think MBT can be a backup and Harris can give it another year.

I don’t see Fajardo going anywhere as a starter. The Evil Empire is a remote possibility but they have Tre Ford who has looked very good. CF is likely going to fall into the “experienced backup” category, assuming he doesn’t retire (or stay in Montreal with a pay cut?)

well I don’t want to bash Ford but really not winning any games vs good teams and having problems reading defenses isn’t my definition of “very good”

he was average-above average. has a lot of work to do before he’s 100% starter material… IMO

this video backs up what I’ve said.

as per Dave Campbell, the Elks Color Commentator

Ford will need to come into Camp to compete for the role, there’s no automatic Starting Job.

as per Campbell:

“The fans are saying give him the keys now”, “within the football circles, the commentary is a lot different… a good athlete, progressed in 2024. still concerns about mechanics, how he works behind the scenes. etc. there is a sentiment though… look at the teams he wins against and the teams he loses against. he’s losing to the good teams and he’s not able to find his way through that. he (Hervey) would like Ford to call Mitchell, and call Reilly, what does that tell you?, like read between the lines here, its you need to learn how to prepare and how to conduct yourself as a starting QB.” , “his best landing spot is in Edmonton, because the sentiment is too, there’s no market for Tre Ford outside of Edmonton”

Jee… What have I said earlier? I just might know something about this…

His giant ego will not work as a backup. The divisiveness he created was obvious and he never talked much to Ford until he was playing a team Ford dismantled earlier, while trying to play hero and keep the Elks in the playoff picture in week 18. Time to call it a career…

Masoli - not sure. Needs the right offence to work. Part of his meh this year is that Ottawa’s OLine was pretty meh…hence the highest turnover number in the regular season.

Harris - his decision. Last year’s injury may help him make that decision though as there is a high chance of arthritis developing very quickly in the knee.

I’ve been thinking about who I’d like to see in the QB room for Toronto next season, and it’s an interesting puzzle.

I assume Kelly will be back once he’s done with rehab, but the 3-6 month timeline means he might not be ready to practice until May/June. And even then, there’s the question of whether he’ll still be the same QB. As for Nick Arbuckle, I think he’s earned his spot as the clear #2. The guy won a Grey Cup, after all—hard to argue with that.

Now, QB3 is where it gets tricky. I really like Cameron Dukes. I felt confident with him stepping up as QB1 when Kelly was suspended, but I’m not sold on him as a short-yardage guy. He’s just not built to push the pile. That said, he did win a few games for us when given the chance, so I’d say let him compete in camp. Maybe pair him up with Bryan Scott, who knows the system and brings a bit more size to the table.

That said, my dream addition would be Dakota Prukop from Edmonton. He’s one of the best rushing QBs in the league, and I’d love to see him in double blue. He’d be a perfect fit for those short-yardage situations.
