TORONTO — Free agency can be a complicated process for everyone involved.
Teams have to navigate the salary cap and find a way to add as many good players as they can in positions of need within their budget. Players, on the other hand, have to deal with multiple offers by different teams while still finding the best fit for themselves.
So…the four former Argos Edmonton signed will do well because they know Corey Mace well?? So, the Argos will do well this year, because Pinball knows Jeremy O’Day well?? >sigh< Editing. Try it.
Why can’t the CFL keep the tracker up to date. Teams have officially announced on their websites and or Facebook some players as signed or re-signed several days ago and the CFL still has nothing noted beside those players name in the tracker. I am expecting more from a professional league!
Thats not bad - a few days. The Elks Thomassin retired, took a job coaching U sports, had an story published about it a month later and a month after that no one has updated his status to retired…
Big question in Regina, I’ll repeat, is coaching staff & I’ll add Harris & LT to the equation. DC’s, with big reputations going in, have in recent years often fallen flat. Before Claybrooks there was Richie Hall, Greg Marshall, Kavis Reed to name a few. Wasn’t Chamblin run out of town too?
I agree the Elks are going to be a team to watch. Last year they had over 30 players in their 1st & 2nd years. Pretty much all of them are back on extended contracts. With a veteran QB to run a VG looking, young offence they’re going to give clubs trouble IMO. The ST issues appear over. Bede averaged over 70 yds on kickoffs, 2nd by a hair to Haggerty on punts. Add in his #1 FG% & Leake & the ST’s are looking to be among the league’s best.
Wpg has a top offence but a large sized hole @ RT. Their DL has been noticeably hit &, quite frankly, their 36 year old MLB is the worst in the West (sorry Adam). You need only look at the last 2 GC’s to see where having a lot of firepower leaves you when the D can’t hold leads in the end.
Calgary has added some big pieces on D. They & BC look to have the best overall D’s in the West, personnel wise.
BC - lost some talent @ WR & Hatcher will be gone awhile. But with Stanback they’ll have a more balanced offence.
Early days but I see BC, Wpg & Edm in the playoffs in no particular order, Stamps & Riders battling it out for a wild card spot. But there are a lot of FA’s still available so we’ll see.
I don’t recall any controversy with Lucky in Winnipeg, other than he was rarely used in the lineup. Lucky got tired of waiting and moved on. Worked out great for BC, not so much for Winnipeg.
Stamps will have a better team by virture of the USFL/XFL merger. DaveD said recruiting was harder last year because of the 2 leagues… Stamps seem to depend on this and do a better job at it then most of the other 8
Based on their last 2 seasons, I don’t see how the Stamps are better at recruiting. Huf was good at finding diamonds in the rough but he’s basically retired.
Well…they made most of their mistakes in 22 and paid for them in 23. Maier is a very good QB - but not in Calgary’s offence where he needs to read and get rid of the ball really quickly.
It also looked a lot like Dave did the bulk of the coaching before Huf retired and his other coaches came up short last season. Especially the OC. They have one of the best backs in the league in Mills but he was woefully underused all season save one game.
As for the Elks - right on the money. With one exception Teams didn’t count for a lot last season. They were how do I say - serviceable - but rarely outstanding.
As for the rest - they had the smallest number of free agents entering the free agent window, because most of their guys are like was said, 2nd and third year guys.
After the previous managment gave away guys like Hladik, Betts, and a ton of others who never played a game here, they are drafing guys who are nearly ready to play and we will get to see more of those guys this season.
