First-round-pick Bennett 'fired up' to join Bombers

Anthony Bennett was just a few minutes into his introductory media conference as a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers when one thing crystallized almost instantly:

I had never heard of Grambling State University. I just read up about it: very interesting. I hope that the Bombers found a gem with kicker Marc Orozco.

Grambling has a long history as a place where black athletes could play when they weren’t allowed to play in many other places. I remember reading about it a lot in the 70’s. I’m not sure about Orozco since they signed Castillo but maybe they keep him around on the practice roster.

Love the attitude of Tony Bennett and the close relationship he has already developed with O’Shea and Bomber culture. He loves special teams and is a player in the mold of Willie Jefferson. It doesn’t bother me that he is a fake Canadian who doesn’t appear to ever have set foot in Canada. We’ll take him.

Mom’s Canadian. Played for the Regina Rams. Sounds like both feet have set foot on Canadian soil?

You are correct. I overlooked the fact he played for the Rams and focussed on his Florida background. My bad.

He was born in Florida and it sounds like he was raised there and came to Canada to play university ball. He is definitely an American but qualifies as a fake Canadian would be more accurate to say.
