Can someone break into Sean Whyte's house and steal the photos he apparently has of Jim Popp and Bob Wetenhall in compromising positions with farm animals? If we don't change kickers at least by next year, I give up. Pippin cannot punt. And he's completely unreliable as a placekicker outside of 40-42 yards. Hfx is right; look at the difference between McCallum and Whyte. McCallum was lights out on his kicks, he twice saved TDs with tackles, and he even threw a 15-yard completion on a third-down trick play to keep the chains moving for BC. Whyte? Effing useless...
I’m surprised Johnny wasn’t the one starting this thread. All that remains is a Fire Wetenhall thread.
Popp is not great as a HC on the field. His decisions stem from his team having to come from behind. When he wants to get points he’s ending up giving them. Then when he needs a TD like in the argos game he goes for 3 points. Also too many penalties keeping drives going and still giving up gift points.
I’d make Berry interim HC since Miller is still the OC anyway. He can still direct the offence and leave the D and ST to his assistants. The only thing is does he want the media attention and the pressure? I feel that Jim is doing a better job off the field answering questions and taking the pressure squarely on his shoulders. I don’t feel that he should absolutely have to do that but if he’s ok with it then he’ll remain as HC. If he feels more comfortable focusing solely on his GM duties then he’ll probably just tell Bob about it and they will surely work out a solution.
Watching McCallum down a streaking Carrier, who was headed for the end zone, I thought to myself, "I wish we a kicker like McCAllum who can do this type of defense" while also thinking was the ace CFL kicker is indeed McCallum. However when checking, from the Als site it appears that perhaps our opinions of our kicker are undervalued. For example, on average length of punts, Whyte's was 43.8, McCallum's 40.7. Longest punt, Whyte 67 McClum's 53, successful FGS, Whyte 85.7, McCallum's 85.7, longest FG Whyte 48 McCallum's 45. On kicking points- Whyte 89, McCallum 50.
Just by examining stats it would appear Whyte has been , this year to date, the better of the K/P duties and, myself and others are undervaluing his production. Putting aside these stats, there is no doubt that McCallum is able at slowing or stopping an offensive back streaking towards a TD. McCallum is the larger (and appears as the strongest )of the two and has more experience than Whyte in the kicking game as a whole. Whyte is younger, less experienced and has a body weight lesser of the two meaning that he has the less strength of the two.
Whyte's stats are, on the whole, better than those of McCallum whom I thought was one of the best K/P in the CFL. But, the stats point otherwise and, Whyte is perhaps more effective in the K/P role than we fans have perceived him to be. Another factor is the reality that Whyte is the youngest and less experienced player. Perhaps Whyte's role will become more effective as he grows and, attains greater experience. Whyte might benefit from weight training, the building of muscles and increasing his weigh to provide him with greater strength and, perhaps he would get additional coaching help in developing the run stopping function that McCallum now has? I was unable to get kickoff stats.
You have to keep in mind that McCallum missed camp and was injured for the first five games of the season. Your looking at a 3 game window here. You have to be careful looking stats as pure numbers.
I did not mention the number of shanks produced by Whyte.
That’s ok AlsPhil, Johnny was just pulling your leg! You are a good dude. Be careful when starting a “Fire XXXX” thread. It gets really addictive!!!
