Final Cuts

Seem to recall the inability of the D allowing 52 pts being the bigger issue whilst AC (the old man!) and the O managing to put up over 40 pts in the eastern semi final game.

Yes...he just didn't do enough to win the game
thx for pointing that out

Lol
A load of hypotheticals in a “foreign” language to make a cryptic point

Some people will just Gob anything the rara machine feeds them
Every year it’s the same thing
WTH do you expect them to say,
“Oh boy…we’re in trouble now”?
It’s up to the individual to make a sensible assessment based on what little we’re told
And on what’s happened in the past

Aaron Hunt looks like he might help…maybe a lot
Is he the lineman the Alouettes so clearly need?
We’ll see
But it is amusing how “fans” always get hyped up by the press at this time of year
I remember how tenacious folks here were in their support of Tim Maypray
My excitement over him lasted all of 1 game as I remember
Then I spent the next season and a half trying to convince folks how bad he was
So it goes
Denial IS the longest (and slowest) river in the World

Spent last night watching the Eskies vs the Lions
At least Eskimo fans KNOW what to expect
Kerry Joseph?
(shudder)

At least it’s clear that Poppn Stuff knows last year wasn’t good enough
Hence the BIG focus on the defence so far this year

It’s a shame Bowman is injured

I`m curious SAM, are there any areas or players on the Als that you are happy with. Besides A.D.

Please feel free to expand.

LOL. You’re hanging that loss on Calvillo when we gave up 52 points to the Tiger-Cats? I didn’t realize AC was supposed to rush the passer, stop the run, and drop into pass coverage.

The Dline I am not concerned about. Bowman is week to week and Moton who looked in phenomenal shape will likely be back after nine games. Hunt has 5 years experience as a starter and Montgomery's played 6 years in the NFL.

The Special teams are a huge sore. I just don't see the enthusiasm and I want to see a drastic change in that department. I wonder if Bishof would still be there had we not had to replace 2 coordinators and a couple more coach. I think this gave him another opportunity. I hope he proves us wrong...

I had forgotten about Baggs, but I wouldn’t shell out huge money for an injury replacement. If the D-line struggles out the gate, we may reach out to Baggs, but hopefully we don’t have to.

Add to that Murrell, who’s been impressing in preseason.

I hope he proves us wrong, too, but it looks like another year of same old same old. I do hope that if we're struggling again on ST at the midseason mark, Trestman cans Bischoff and brings in a replacement swiftly.

apparently the old man AC is suppose to be a one man machine, offense, defense and ST.

Anyone else notice that SAM goes quiet, or flat out ignores the post whenever this point is made?

I, for one, am excited about our defense. Cautiously excited, of course, but like d&p, I think that these first year players will be playing for at least a few more.

I was just looking at some games from last season, namely the "almost" L in Winnipeg (with that infamous call on the part of the zebras!) and the Hamilton game in Montreal which we won by the skin of our teeth! In both cases, the D almost did us in. In addition, I would add that in the last 3 games of the season, we could have sealed the deal (i.e. an automatic berth to the EDF), but didn't and the D couldn't get the key stops we needed.

The apprehension I have right now is the injury issue to some of our stellar D linemen prior to the start of the season. However, Jim Popp and the Als were obviously aware of our problems on D and set out to do something about it. Since the return of pro football to Montreal, Jim Popp has been a great part of a great success story in being able to sniff out talent. We have had several coaches and a myriad of O and D schemes in that time and managed to put a highly competitive and winning team on the field. Do I have confidence in Jim Popp? You bet!

However, it is waaaaaayyy too early to begin post-season lamentations or preparations for a GC parade down Ste Catherine St. There is a lot of football to be played between now and the end of November. My only priority now is a W in Calagary on July 1st.

Go Als go!!!

The Als short yardage running game was BRUTAL in 2011 So much so that we saw Calvillo passing on some 3rd down situations...
Got news for you, we did that in 2009 too when Avon was here. I was re-watching a few old regular-season games from the beginning of 2009 and I saw Anthony in shotgun on third and short.
And AD ACTUALLY getting stopped on a QB sneak (For the sneak to work there should be some plausibility to the short-yardage RB game)
You're actually blaming Adrian getting stopped on the running back? Nine times out of ten, the QB falls forward for the first down. Plausibility with the running back has nothing to do with anything. Adrian got stopped because the line didn't get a good push, and because he got predictable in his approach, which sometimes happens. Trying that right-side move is fine once in a while, but eventually teams will game-plan to stop it. And again, he got stuffed a few times on short yardage in 2009 as well, trying exactly that same right-side sneak.

Jim Popp told Herb that " as many as three more players could be released outright". Could these players be amongst:
Import RB Victor Anderson.
1 or 2 amongst import defensive linemen: Alan-Michael Cash,Ventrell Jenkins and Duke Lemmens.
Non-import Wr Ezra Millington.

Could jim Popp claim an non-import WR relesed or to be released? The Als are thin in this area. Glen MacKay formerly of Tiger-Cats a possibility? CIS rookie Johnny Aprile released by Winnipeg?

Stay tuned!

Richard

We are definitely thin at NI WR and could use help there. Even if Deslauriers and Bedard / Lavoie are splitting a starting Canadian spot, we still need a Canadian backup to Deslauriers, or else we'd be forced to run four-receiver sets exclusively in the event that Deslauriers got injured.

I don’t think we should use a roster spot on a guy who we won’t play or is not going to be a ST starter. We don’t even know if Deslaurier’s won a starting position on the offense. I wish reporters asked the right questions…

As for Aprile the Bombers asked him to go back to the CIS.

I am curious to see how we manage our 10 Offensive Linesmen… I think Bomben will be the sixth or traded for a Canadian dlinesman, Matte on the 46. Barrette on the 9IR and White on the PR.

I recall that back in the 60's Jim Trimble, then a successful coach, of the Ti Cats, stood out when injuries overtook the team. Trimble used to brag about his close connections with the NFL. When injuries stopped the Ti Cats, Jim would call his old NFL buddies who would suggest a player or two from their " final cuts" . Trimble utilized the NFL cuts to really strengthen his team. To give one example Garney Henley was released from the NFL then picked up by Trimble and, became a two way star in the CFL and ,is on our Hall of Fame. Many NFL final cuts ended up with coach Trimble and, the Ti Cats were one of the most powerful CFL teams at the time. Several of these NFL final cuts became stars in the CFL proving that football connections can reap huge dividends.

Nice to see Desriveaux get picked up by TO
I hope rumours that he was released because of the investment troubles with Kerry Carter
Like to think Trestman isn’t petty enough to let such minor matters affect his decisions

More likely Danny was simply languishing on the bench
Unlikely to ever play on this team
(he IS a Canadian after receiver all)
So good to see him get picked up by a team with less Americo-centric ideas
At least at skill positions.

The signing of Danny Desriveaux, by the Argos, is the reflection of a team that is lacking non-import talent; they have to sign rejects-at many positions- from other team to have a roster of no less than 20 non-imports.

When a Team has non-import players such as: Danny Desriveaux,Cedric Gagné-Marcoux,Kyle Jones,Andrew Jones,Jeff Keeping,Marc Parenteau,Chris Smith, Wayne Smith and Jonathan St-Pierre, I don't expect them to fight for first place. Their american talent is,and by far, superior to their non-import talent. The Argos are one of the worse team,if not the worse in terms of non-import talent. I don't see future starts in their present non-import receivers: Mike Bradwell,Danny Desriveaux and Spencer Watt. Yes,the Als are thin at non-import talent, but they compensate with superior talent on the offensive line; furthermore, whereas the Als have all star talent a WR/SB,the Argos have zero star in import WR/SB.

En d'autres mots, nous n'avons pas de conseils à recevoir/des exemples à suivre des Argos, particulièrement concernant les joueurs canadiens.

Richard

Major surprises,at least to me, with regards to finalized roster; I do know that changes could still be made.

8 players were placed on injury lists, including 2 on 9 games,7 players on practice roster and 1 was released,i.e. import DE Duke Lemmens.

The major surprises:
We went from 8 import DL to only 3; Aland Michael-Cash on practice roster-no surprise- and Mike Lockle on practice roster,-surprise-John Bowman and Michael Montgomery on 1 game injury list; Duke Lemmens released. The import DL on cureent active roster are: Hunt,Jenkins and Murrell. Davis will, most probably, line-up as rush-end. A player-Lockle- on practice roster could be added to active roster.

There are 7 import DBs on roster; also 3 non-imports,i.e.:Carter,Milton and Townsend.

There are 5 non-import linebackers on roster,i.e.:Brouillette,Dublanko,Emry,Ridgeway and Roy. Brouillette and Emry could be the inside linebackers/starters on 3-4.

1 import OL on roster. Barrette and Matte on 1 game injury list and White on practice roster.

Anxious to see if roster will remain as such for July,1st game at Calgary. Based on the current roster, I expect that the Als will dress 2 RBs,i.e. Whitaker and 1 of Anderson and Devine;will dress 6 DBs,i.e. Anderson,Brown,Hebert,Parker and Williams and 1 of Gainey and Osaisai.

Richard

One positive aspect of this roster is that 4 of the 6 players drafted this year are on the current roster; they are: Bo Adebayo,DE,Patrick Lavoie,FB,Lance Milton,DB and Bryn Roy,LB. A fith one,Ryan White, is on practice roster. One of the 6 players drafted will return to school.

I am positive that no other Team has done as well with current year non-import draftees. Congratulations to Jim Popp and his staff.

Richard
