Ferguson: 5 potential landing spots for Eugene Lewis

As we begin 2025, the CFL’s pending free agent list is still deep and varied with plenty of marquee names potentially up for grabs.

If Geno Lewis goes, those are big shoes to fill, and this would simply be a cap move given his pay. I hope the Elks can work something out with him, but hey, business.

I agree with some of the opinions on the Edmonton forum that Eugene was overpaid last year and that while he is still a good receiver, he is no longer top 5 in the league material. His salary may therefore be a lot more reasonable this year. I would be happy to have him alongside Lawler in Winnipeg if Schoen doesn’t stay, which I expect will be the case. Otherwise I wouldn’t take him ahead of Lawler or Schoen. I think there is a good chance he will remain in Edmonton and that his salary will be south of $200,000 wherever he ends up.

Never say never to a homecoming. While I don’t see it happening in reality, this is based on imagining what a more mature and experienced Tyson Philpot would look like paired with Lewis at the top of his powers back in front of a fan base who adores him.

Plus, it never hurts to get a new quarterback (Davis Alexander) some jump ball help. Oh, and that McLeod Bethel-Thompson guy who threw Lewis a bunch of touchdowns last season should also be in the mix if things go according to Montreal’s preferred script.

This is pure fantasy. The Als have no need at American receiver, with Mack locked into a long-term contract, Spieker having had a breakout 2024, and Charleston Rambo’s emergence. And why would MBT, projected to be a backup IF he signs in Montreal, be “in the mix”? Why would Alexander need “jump ball help” from a receiver on the downside of his career when his existing crew is more than capable in that regard?

Yeah really!

I make up a bunch of stuff here as many know, but at least they know it and I am clear about it!

That author is trying to pull another fast one on us!

Spare him no mercy at all and if necessary, we’ll get our crew to make him walk the plank!

That made me chuckle, Paolo. Thanks. Arrr matey!

I usually love Ferguson’s writing but lately his stuff has seemed weirdly ungrounded in what’s actually happening around the league.
