Ferguson: 1 priority pending free agent for every team

With coaching shuffles nearing completion and one of the off-season’s biggest pieces in Vernon Adams Jr. already moving from BC to Calgary, it’s about that time to start wrapping our collective minds around the totality of free agency. With long lists, numerous positions involved and endless permutations of how it all shakes out, the CFL’s off-season dance is a dizzying rush of curiosity.

Good article but the line “Fajardo is Gone” sticks out. Did he retire/get traded/cut/free agent? What did I miss?

Ferguson just believes that David Alexander is the QB that should lead the Als in 25. It’s just one man’s opinion maybe because Fajardo didn’t do well enough in the Eastern final to repeat the return to the GC game. The Montreal coaches & GM will decide.

Did you just rename and repost this article?
Sounds familiar

They have already decided that Alexander is the QB1. That decision was publicly made days ago when Alexander re-signed. They will explore every option for Fajardo, whether it’s restructuring his contract to let him stay with the team as QB2, restructuring and trading him, or outright releasing him.

Lets face facts though. It’s likely that they are or will be shopping Fajardo as I can’t ever remember a QB being demoted and sticking around.

So then they face the market value question. That comes to which teams are interested in him and how many there are interested, because if it was say one team? They might get a couple footballs and a well used jock strap, or they just wait for him to be released…

Yep. It’s by no means certain they’ll be able to get much for him. It could come down to him being released. But I know Maciocia wants to give Cody a chance to speak with other teams and see if there’s interest.

But who has a pressing need for a QB1? Maybe Toronto if Kelly isn't ready to start the season after coming off injury? I would have thought Edmonton, but it looks as if they are finally going to give Ford a legitimate chance to be #1, keeping MBT as QB2? I think he'll be released and won't get picked up until someone gets injured or by BC if Rourke continues to faulter.

No one, really. If Cody lands anywhere it will be as a QB2 who may be able to claw his way back into starter status if someone gets injured or underperforms.

The part I didn’t understand was “announcing” Alexander as number 1.

Wouldn’t you get more for Cody if you quietly shopped him around and held the announcement until after you had a deal in place for him?

I think that was for organization clarity and for Alexander. They might have looked at the Rourke-Adams situation in BC this past year and said, “Well, everyone’s going to figure out who our no. 1 is anyway, so best to be clear about it and draw a line in the stand.” Maciocia probably had to prioritize re-signing Alexander quickly so (presumably) some of his 2025 money could be shoved into 2024 in the form of a bonus.

I also think the likelihood of Cody getting traded for anything substantial is very low. Vernon Adams, a better quarterback, went for very little, and that was to a division rival. Everyone knows a team in this situation has 0 flexibility to keep both QBs around, so they’ll wait it out.

Yes. But the awkward situation they have put Cody in could have been avoided.
I would think they at least own him that…

They don’t owe him anything. They have to do what’s best for the team. I’m sure they told him about the Alexander signing ahead of time and gave him the green light to talk to other CFL teams. Maciocia was very complimentary speaking of Cody at the press conference and openly said they want to help him find the best situation. I don’t see any issue.

Fajardo is likely to be released as he’s due a 200K bonus on Feb 1st. That precludes MTL keeping him and any team trading for him. He may retire to full-time broadcasting apparently he works with ESPN in his home state during off-season.

Update: Fajardo was traded to Edmonton and will most likely renegotiate his contract.

Told up front he is number 2 behind Ford, and that renegotiation is expected, as laid out in this post:
