Former Ticats and Redblacks kicker Brett Maher wins job with Dallas Cowboys

Former Ottawa Redblack and Hamilton Tiger-Cat Brett Maher has won the kicking job with the Dallas Cowboys.
Maher beat out Dan Bailey, the second-most accurate kicker in NFL history, who was released. He had been with the Cowboys since 2011.
Maher made four of his five field goal attempts in the pre-season, including a 57-yarder, while Bailey was coming off the worst year of his career in 2017, making 15 of 20 attempts while missing two extra points. He also missed four games due to injury.
Maher had arguably his best pro season with Ottawa in 2017 when he recorded a 46.7-yard punting average and made 82 per cent of his field goals (41-for-50). The 28-year-old hit the exact same number of field goals on as many attempts for Hamilton in 2016 with a 45.9 punting average.

After going unselected in the 2013 NFL draft, Maher signed with the New York Jets, but he was released two and a half months later. The Dallas Cowboys brought him in for two weeks of training camp that August and let him go. Winnipeg brought Maher to camp in 2014. Once the Bombers cut him he broke into the CFL with the Redblacks in 2014 by making 18-of-25 field goals and punting for a 45.4-yard average.
He was signed by the Cowboys this past April.
With Maher set to make $480,000 USD, the move will save the Cowboys $3.4 million against the salary cap.

With Maher set to make $480,000 USD, the move will save the Cowboys $3.4 million against the salary cap…WOW is all I have to say about that

Good for him. Big payday. Do well there and you can make more in a few years than in a career in the CFL. Do well enough and maybe you’ll become a millionaire in fairly short order. This is why players who have a chance to make it in the NFL will exhaust every opportunity to do so before signing in the CFL, or returning here.

Miss two field goals in a row and you’re gone the next day

No pressure though, right?
