Has a TD and some big catches. Cool to see. Also recovered the onside kick vs. Packers in NFC Championship.
Apparently they discovered him working in a shoe store and invited him to try out.
Can anyone refresh my memory - what happened to Matthews in 2013? I assume he got hurt and that's why his production dropped off from 1,000+ yards to 138. Did no CFL team want him in 2014, or did he make the choice himself to try for the NFL?
I guess Brandon Browner gets the last laugh

Also, the 2013 Winnipeg Blue Bombers may have been the worst professional football team in history.
He was healthy enough to work out for about a dozen NFL teams this off-season, and he has made the decision to give it a shot.Well that's a little different than the shoe store tale they kept trying to spin on today's broadcast.
At least they didn't claim the Seahawks found him shivering in an igloo or something.
Don't let the truth get in the way of a good story.
I'm guessing he already had strong reasons to believe he was headed to the NFL and didn't really want to chance anything on the injury front.
He's probably the MVP if the Seahawks win that game. Pretty impressive for an afterthought signing by Seattle, and even more proof that great players play in the CFL.
I guess they can't point to cheating this time.
Great game for 2 CFL alums
Yep, that's the truth. Too bad for Willson though...
Matthews was a very talented receiver for the Bombers when he was healthy and it's nice to see him back to that form.
I agree, I think he would have been.
And I don’t agree with Brady winning the MVP. That should have gone to Butler. Sure, it was only one play, but it won them the game. He doesn’t make that pick then New England loses the Super Bowl. So to me he is the MVP; without his play, they lose.
Tom Brady's Ego @TomBradysEgo
Malcolm Butler you the real MVP! https://vine.co/v/OFBV1P1pmA9
Brady agrees with Madjack
Story I read acknowledges he had played with the Bombers and says the Seahawks contacted him while he was working at his off-season job; presumably the shoe store. So not inaccurate, but not the extreme rags to riches story implied by some.
So if they had reached him on his cell phone when he happened to be standing on a street corner, the spin might have been that they rescued him from homelessness.
Make that 3.... Jon Ryan Seattle punter, another ex Bomber (2004-05)
What do Ryan do? Was he the game changer for one of the teams? Did he eventually shut down the most important player in the game? Or did he kick a football a couple of yards further than a couple of the thousand other NCAA, CIS, and NAIA, or even Aussie Rules players could.... As far as I am concerned.. Jon Ryan could win 5 superbowls and still not be mentioned in the same sentence as Ruban Maye's when it came to NFL players from Saskatchewan
Exactly, Matthews got hurt early in his option year in 2013 and missed the rest of the season. After his 1000+ yard rookie season it was clear he wanted to use that to leapfrog to the NFL, that injury and the lack of production in the 2nd season hurt his chances as he became a FA. There was some question about whether he was that seriously hurt or if his attitude was bad like Chad Simpson's was who went home after getting hurt that same season. But the reason he was working in a shoe store was not because the Bombers didn't want him. In fact, people in the Bombers organization, players and office staff, still communicate with him regularly and he had a deal to return if he wanted it. He held out though because he wanted the NFL shot. And just to make it clear, here's a tweet from the Bombers media relations guy on Matthews:

We kept close tabs on him through 2014 & are real happy for him. He was never, ever, out of our plans if he wanted to be back in CFL.
