Moton Hopkins transferred from practice roster to active roster.
Chima Ik.... transferred from active roster to practice roster.
Etienne Boulay transferred from 1 game injury list to 9 game injury list.
Curtis Dublanko transferred from 1 game injury list to suspended.
That great returners like Ezra Landry, Larry Taylor, Chad Owens and Pinball Clemons
All share the same characteristic
Their small stature...sure
But along with their diminutive size
Comes a nervous system like a humming bird
That quickness, both in decision making, in lateral motion and extreme acceleration
Are all functions of the smaller body and shorter response time
Of their itty bitty nervous system
And the micro-second less time it takes for their muscles to respond
To what the mind dictates
But small size doesn't necessarily guarantee the rest
And that "returner's mind"
...the capacity to intuit open lanes and blocking schemes
Is every bit as rare a gift as those "returner's nerves"
When I first heard that Chad Owens had been dumped
And we had a new guy
Tim Maypray
I was understandably excited to see what this "little dynamo"
Would bring to our return game
It didn't take me long to realise that although Maypray had good speed
Those other qualities that make for a great returner
Were almost completely absent
I can't believe great football minds like Trestman and Milanovich
Haven't found their way to this conclusion
Even yet
Even after more than a year of sluggishness...bad decision making...and worst results
Loyalty is one thing
But surely it shouldn't come at the expense of the team's success
Or it's continued pursuit of excellence
I could be wrong, but can’t they bring him off the 9-game IR at midway mark of the season? If not, yikes. But Brouillette should be ready to go in a few games, and Hecht has IMO done a good job filling in at safety.
Man, they must really not be impressed with Chima to PR him.
The conclusion I get from today`s moves is that the team is really up against the salary cap.
It also would indicate the Als would have a tough time winning a CFL bidding war for John Chick if he is released by the Colts.
I would also expect to see Chima plucked from the practice roster by another team. I really had high hopes for him, but he has obviously not developed as projected.
Chima was the second pick of that great 2010 draft which also brought Mate, Dublanko, Brouillette and Bomben to the team. Chima came with a good reputation but, has to be looked at as a disappointment. With Chima knocked off active status, the others, don't rate mention on the depth chart other than Bomben who spells Flory and catches the odd pass from the tackle eligible position. Brouillette is on the injured list and, I do hope we will see him at safety soon.
He's just been placed on the practice roster, the team has a week to recall him, this is a musical chair game...Does not mean the Als have given up on him.
That is an interesting topic you bring up Senior. But, in humans, the normal speed of a nerve impulse is 45 meters/sec. SO, if you are 5’2 or 6’8, the message from the brain gets to the muscles “just” as fast. At that speed, even 2 or 3 feet more to travel will not result in any practical or discernible difference.
The biggest loss happens from the sensation of stimuli upon the retinas (seeing the field and the players), the perception of this stimuli (analysing the opposing players positions and projected trajectories, as well as your teammates and there blocking positions), and then making a decision based upon this information (which direction to run). Once all of those cognitive processes are done (around half a second to one second or more, depending on the returners visual spatial abilities and processing speed of these abilities), the message leaves the brain to instruct the muscles. Like I wrote , this message travels at 45 meters/sec. No time is not lost in this message from brain to muscles, but in the cognitive processes before the message is sent.
I think they traded for Mullinder to replace Bekesiak during his injury, and then back him up, or rotate at DT. Mullinder helps the Als maintain the defensive line quality (or lack of) they had before Bekesiak’s injury. He does not improve the line.
Lucas is temporary at DT in my opinion. He is only there to fill in till Mullinder plays. But, I am surprised Mullinder is not playing this Thursday. Really surprised…
I am also stumped that Maypray is still on the roster! He has had almost a season and a half to prove himself. He has only proved he cannot return kicks or punts, and that he is not a receiver. What does it take for a guy to play himself off the roster?
Does Maypray have leverage of some kind on Trestman? A s*x tape or compromising pictures? I am being silly on purpose, but it is baffling to me that he is still on the roster.
The hummingbird analogy was meant as a metaphor…not a scientific analysis
As any athlete over say 6’2" or more will attest…smaller, quicker athletes would seem to have exactly that: a “revved up” metabolism…when the simplest explanation of leverage of shorter frames and lesser bulk suffices.
There are…of course…some athletes who…through a freak of nature have quicker response times, better visual acuity and that…combined with smaller more agile frames and a mind to process spacial data and the capacity for quick and effective decisions make them superb kick returners.
But for those of us “blessed in other ways” these little guys really do seem to be going at “a different speed”
But if they really believed in Chima, they would have moved McElveen back inside to DT (before Jermaine got injured, obvs) and used Chima full-time at end. And Popp specifically mentioned in the trade press release that Mullinder has the versatility to play both inside and outside. So Mullinder’s ability to play end is important to the Als, which again is not a good sign for Chima. At what point will Chima be ready to be a starter?
Journalistes have been saying that but I have my doubts.
The current active roster has 24 imports and 22 non-imports; 4 players won't dress. The 2 imports will/should be: Marc and McElveen; the non imports should be,based on previous games, DeAngelis and Steenbergen, meaning that Mullinder would dress. The fact that Chima Ike...-DE- has been transferred from the active roster to the practice roster is also an indice that Mullinder will play; he could see action only on special teams, but I expect that he will play. It is not as if the player had been inactive for weeks. Last week, Lucas came in 1 day or so before the Argos' game and played. Could be the same with Mullinder.
