Als have the biggest and most expensive coaching staff in the league by a wide margin, I appreciate that our owner is willing to spend that kind of money on our football operations. Walch and Edme are guys who don’t make big money and working their butt’s off.

Effectivement, Walch était responsable du contrôle de la qualité des unités spéciales et c’est Bischoff qui était l’entraîneur attitré à cette affectation, en plus d’avoir à entraîner les demis et d’être assistant de l’entraîneur-chef. Je n’ai d’ailleurs pas écrit que Walch était l’entraîneur des unités spéciales, ni qu’il en avait la charge, ceci dit tout à fait amicalement. Il demeure que lors des deux dernières saisons, notre unité a été une des plus déficientes de la ligue. Je ne lui en fais pas porter le blâme, mais reste qu’on peut espérer que son travail apportera cette fois de meilleurs résultats. Si j’avais cru que la déficience du jeu de nos unités spéciales lui était imputable, j’aurais réclamé sa mutation il y a longtemps.
Je pense avoir exprimé assez souvent que nous devions avoir un entraîneur dédié aux unités spéciales pour qu’on comprenne que je ne mettais pas la piètre performance des Alouettes sur les épaules de Walch. Je l’ai plutôt attribuée au fait que Bischoff en avait probablement trop sur le dos pour bien réussir dans toutes ses affectations.

Good news. Bischoff can now concentrate on coaching the running backs.
Andy Bischoff is still -and I have no problems- the Special Teams Coordinator along with running backs coach and Administrative Assistant to the Head Coach. The special teams players have to improve and new special teams players have to be added.

Je persiste à croire que le cerveau de nos unités spéciales ne devrait se consacrer qu’à cette affectation. Tout le monde dit que c’est le tiers de la partie, et on n’y consacrait qu’un tiers de coordonnateur et aucun entraîneur? Je crois que le piètre rendement de nos unités spéciales est en bonne partie dû à cette situation, et non aux compétences mêmes de Bischoff. Que Nugent lui ait été adjoint comme entraîneur devrait au moins l’aider grandement dans cet aspect de son travail.
I don`t think we are any further ahead than last year on Special Teams with Bischoff again split in his duties. The new assistant is a qulity control guy - he might be good at breaking down film and spotting tendencies - but he has no background coaching special teams.
I guess we have to give Bischoff the benefit of the doubt, but it is going to be a short leash. It is one thing for Trestman like all coaches to say special teams is 1/3 of the game, it is another to truly make sure time and resources are dedicated to it.
Special teams is not necessarily 50 yard field goals or 100 yd. returns, but about field position.
C’est le nom de son poste, et pourtant, il me semble que dans l’annonce de l’embauche, Trestman a dit “new coaches”. Enfin, espérons que ce sera une amélioration.

Spencer, Jones, Guzman, Laybourn, Woldu are all gone. I`m just saying.
We better have replacements groomed. And in reading Nugent`s coaching background, while he might be a bright up and comer, he has no previous experience with special teams.
Restelli, Hebert, Lavoie, Ruttan,Brouillette,Wood. We have guys to take over the job. Anyway I think guys who want to make the team this year many will be evaluated strongly on their efforts on Special teams. ST is about heart, desire and athletic ability.
And five members of that list are now gone!
And will be replaced by younger, better players. I’m not worried, personally.
People wanted change on special teams...You can see what Jim is doing. He's moving out guys who could only contribute on special teams and he's replacing them with guys who can play on offense or defense and play ST as well.
Lavoie is exactly that.
This will allow us to keep the guys we want around. This way if we have injuries we won't dead in the water like we were last year. I think there are a few more surprises to come. One of which is a big physical american receiver...
Yup, I like the changes I’m seeing so far. Better every-down players contributing on ST and giving us more flex and depth should injury strike. I love the Lavoie pick TBH, he’s not a glamour pick but in the crunch, he could be the difference between winning and losing a close game. Think about how Kerry Carter was able to make crucial players in both Grey Cup wins because he was a legitimate starting fullback who could catch passes rather than just a ceremonial jumbo unit blocking body.
