Are suggesting there will be a HC opening in Calgary?
LOL
Yes. Of course. We believe you.
Not in the slightest; talking about your hypothetical CFL team.
Speaking of which, if your hypothetical team needs a QB you will want to jump on one of the ones developed my Calgary. They are the only ones that are capable.
On my hypothetical team… GM is Branden Mahoney, HC is Mark Kilam…QB is Jake Maier
His last U.S. gig was coaching high school football… hardly a step up from his previous CFL jobs.
Chris Jones is a first class coach and football person in general. However, definitely seems to have commitment issues.
Obviously biding his time. Didn’t like the way he left the kids in the lurch. But, of all the present HC’s in the CFL, how many have been given a spot in the NFL in football OPS? One - Chris Jones. As pointed out above - he’s never been fired. Like him or not, it’s a good hire by the Elks IMO. He had a big advantage in being able to wear 3 hats - GM, HC & DC so helping solve their CAP problems with the release of Sunderland & Elizondo. This creates a lot more pressure on the Rider organization with the Cup in Regina this year. Doubt he can put it together this quickly but imagine Jones ending up in the big game in November. Talk about karma. I feel for the Riders. With 50 on the free agent list, I would not be surprised to see some join Jones. Better sign Jefferson, Winnipeg. If he’s there in February he isn’t coming back.
With the 400 or so current free agents, I could put together a cup winner by Feb. 8/22.
I noticed only an hour ago that this is the second thread in the general forum for the very same topic. Merge threads please?
Sure, but he didn’t leave the CFL for that gig, he left for the NFL and then took the high school job while he waited for something else to open up.
No not a happy dance, most were really ticked off at him for bailing on a great job without finishing it, ask his high school in Tennessee now.
No wonder he's sitting there grinning like an idiot. A few months ago he was coaching his old high school and kicking himself for ever bailing on his Saskatchewan contract. Now by some miracle he's back in the CFL with the same gig he had in Sask. Hard to believe the Elk are so desperate that they would hire him back. Elk fans better not be chirping about how great he is on here after all the garbage they dumped on him when he took the Sask. job. He'll improve your football team, but you can't trust him.
I said my piece in the other thread that I hope they will merge into this one.
It’s “meh” for me, and I feel like in desperate times they went for him quickly as opposed to taking the time, which they do not have, of scouting the field.
He’ll be a sturdy patch to the next coach at best I figure.
I would not be surprised if something, other than illness of course, did him in off the field.
Out of curiosity, do you also get ticked off with players that sign one year deals so they have the option of the big league if a team comes calling?
Or going back a ways players that opted out of their last contract year to attend an NFL tryout?
I have to think this is good news for an Edmonton fan base that just went through a really tough season. Jones has left every team he has worked for in a better place than when he started, at least from a roster standpoint and if that’s all the Elks get out of him than what’s the lose?
Maybe you don’t get him for 10-15 years but if it’s a quick turnaround you want I don’t think there is anyone better. You can worry about his history if you only look at the negative but I’m very certain you will get more from jones than you did from milanovoch. And you are right, hopefully he adds an up and comer to the coaching staff to take over if he leaves for another NFL gig.
Saskatchewan got out of his overpaid contract and instantly had a better record on the field, not to mention that they instantly became a respectable club that didn’t desecrate the CBA with blatantly illegal practice rosters and would actually shake hands after games. Worked out fine. Thanks for leaving, Chris.
Yes with the benefit of hindsight you can say that…But I’m sure at the time the Riders were upset. They did just give him an extension afterall
Much of the starters on defence - Leonard, Henry, Gainey, Marshall & Purifoy were brought in by Jones. Evans & Moore were Jones discoveries & both OT’s - Vaughn & Cofield were guys he found. Not to mention depth players who are still there & draft picks. Everyone of those players just mentioned is a free agent. What would the Riders be without them? As he did in 2016, Jones brought along a bunch of players who played with him in Edmonton, most notably Willie Jefferson. This could pose a problem pdog.
Wad Miller & Kyle Walters are getting pretty diabolical. They might drop Willy Jefferson on the Elks - albeit for a cap-busting $175k-$205k per anum x 2 yr guarantee!
The purpose of “dropping” a star like Jefferson on the Elks is two-fold: 1) Expand their salary cap to the hilt, 2) Make sure you protect Jeffcoat (and others)
Assuming the Elks are going to take on a meaningful $600k to $800k in QB salaries, bringing a cat like Jefferson aboard could really mess with their salary cap. If Wpg can’t get Jeffcoat AND Jefferson in tow - why not force a conference opponent to bust their cap space and bind him to a team who really needs an expansive pass-rusher?
