Elks 2024-2025 Off Season

A Mad scientist looks for overlooked guys that are gem stones everyone else missed… From that same negotiation list.
Sometimes they look like geniuses … .more often though, they look like idiots and get fired

No, IMO it’s not out.
A former coach nearly got lynched (seriously it was damn close) for saying we would lose one game for every rookie in the starting lineup.

He was vindicated though - as he was wrong by one. (on the good side).

More often - they leave and the damage they did shows for the next couple years.

We know that’s been the case for a very long time, and long before many of us got here to the CFL Forum too for that matter.

But it’s quite another matter to pin very high hopes on merely a bunch of such guys in their first season with little continuity from the prior season.

Most just won’t turn out to be the new CFL stars, or at least that won’t be the case with the Elks this season or any given team overloaded with CFL rookies or players with very little pro football experience.

EE problems started with the board not listening to the the people that pay the bills to pursue their own agendas. In this day and age with all the different ways people can entertain themselves it’s going to be very difficult to get the fans back.

Elks extend Martez Ivey; sign Jonathan Kongbo

Ivey is great. But we still have no guard to play beside him. Out of everyone on the team exactly no one else has fit in that spot.

Kongbo has been bodily thrown out of every professional locker room he walked into.

Bang on, and as you observe is a growing challenge nowadays for any entertainment business including pro sports, including even the big and established leagues such as the NBA.

Fail to draw fans or even worse, alienate them, and it has never been harder to get them back than right now.

It was not many years ago, until at least 2020 in my opinion, when the predominant mentality amongst the entertainment industry was rather arrogant along the lines of “well we built it, and we’re building it better, and the people will keep coming, and they’ll keep paying a whole lot more too!” Look at how the cable TV industry used to operate only until recently with some still at it, for example.

That thinking worked great for a few decades starting in the 1990s when the prior wave of new stadiums and venues began construction and in any given home there was cable TV and hardly any internet, and then in the late 1990s almost all of that internet was slow dial-up crap anyway.

But fast forward to 2020 and the real gamechanger was the pandemic. EVEN with a more captive audience at home for sports that were played, did TV ratings for sports go up?

Hell no. Most people discovered so much else to do these days or were distracted by something else, sometimes their kids pulling them in a direction, and there’s no looking back, including particular amongst those under 30 or so who were generally not sitting down for hours watching a game and won’t do that for decades if ever.

And then there was this key part still overlooked beyond the sports and entertainment industry - you can put whatever you want to say or do out there short of anything grievously illegal, but there is NOTHING to require people to pay for it or to agree to pay more for it.

Lose the fans or viewers in any way, and they are not as easily replaceable any more and most especially if they feel they have been wronged.

Nowadays the schedule is so hectic with the sports calendar across sports that there is hardly any way to catch all the games even if it’s your day off, lest you are spending your day in some bar or sports book with a whole bunch of screens and even then not dozing off.

So what do many do now with such a hectic sports calendar or viewing options split up so much? Highlights on YouTube and elsewhere have never been better now that they are edited well, so sometimes we just settle for that when we can’t catch a game live.

And so we are back at it as more challenging than ever, especially when it’s not a winning or good team, for sports organizations to steadily draw in fans at the gate and cash in more via the gameday experience.

Ya, because a bunch of Ed’s Trucking School grads are better at running the business of pro football in Edmonton.
