EE - Training Camp~2011

For a 3-4: I would leave Davis and Hill on the outside and have two rookies in the middle. For a 4-3: Unless there is someone on the radar we don’t know about yet (and/or who earns the job) perhaps T.J. Hill at MLB. For the all important position of Nose Tackle: Maybe Walter Curry, and I’m still curious about Marcus “chunky” Adams as well.

Well on that we have to disagree. If I were to move one of them inside, it would be Davis and not Hill, especially in a 4/3.

Davis is 6 foot 2, 240 pounds. Hill is 5’9’’ and 195 pounds. … to me, Hill’s too small to be an effective MLB in a 4/3; in a 3/4, maybe, but again in a 3/4 I’d move Davis inside, not Hill. In a 4/3, I’m leaving them both on the outside.

Welcome your views/comments MadJack. One of these years I'm going to attend TC so I can see and learn more.

This is huge news and I'm surprised this signing happened so quick for this Eskie Supplemental Draftee.

Just saw this on Facebook. This is fantastic news. I was a little worried about potentially losing two draft picks. Good job, Tillman.

This all sounds good to me except my strong opinion that T.J. Hill of all players should not be part of this linebacker mix, let alone the team, lest he can still play decent as an extra DB in 2nd or 3rd and long sets.

TJ Hill is not linebacker material and I am going to be quicker again this season to point out exactly when he screws up as he did too often last season to cost us as I remember.

For those especially doubtful of my opinion or otherwise high or hopeful on Hill, I’ll make obvious in the posts to come for sake of the exact second in the video clip that we see Hill screw up again on the periphery of the footage and so forth.

Finally something we all agree on? What a coup by Tillman!

We are talking here a player who would otherwise, as he stated, go for and make an NFL team as a free agent now who instead will fare better, no matter what, after playing and starting for two seasons in the CFL at minimum!

A comment in another thread regarding concerns for his size at “only” 6-1 for the DT position by NFL scouts

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=65971#p1127757

are part of the story why he was not drafted, as indeed NFL teams can be just that picky given even such a player’s otherwise demonstrated athleticism in the NCAA conference with the best defences overall – the SEC.

What a beast!

I remember the comments you posted about T.J. Hill in another thread, but I can’t seem to find it. Perhaps Paolo X you can find them and post some footage on Hill. Anyway, IMHO this years team will be completely different discipline wise.

I accept this fine challenge on the likes of TJ Hill, and here are just two examples from video from last season after about 10 minutes of research.

I would hope for our sake not many more examples will have to come in due time for sake of the likes of TJ Hill as far as all this gibberish about any role for him as a linebacker as he clearly is not.

I am not resting my case on just this evidence, but I assure you we’ll have many more such painful memories with Hill in the highlight exposed at any play at LB let alone as part of the core defensive set, for I would think many a big-time rusher would be salivating at the prospect of running to his side and leaving skid marks on his back at times. :thdn: :thdn: :thdn:

~3:50

Note from these painful memories on this play against Calgary, in a goal line set, the woeful positioning of Hill at S (#18 last season, apparently going to #12 this season) in the middle at the start of the play. Hill proves himself insufficient not just one but TWO counts. Watch this and see if you still think Hill will be a decent LB?

Hill should have either stayed back for sake of play action pass or read the run to the outside, but instead he made the awful decision to join the pack in the middle from Burris’ excellent play-fake.

In committing wrongly to the center, Hill did not have anywhere near the recovery speed, as do few players anyway, to catch Burris on his bounce to the outside. With no receivers running routes in the middle Hill did read correctly run instead of pass, but he did not do his job as S let alone what would also be his job at ANY LB position. At only 195 I do not see him as the lead run-stopper in the defensive scheme for sake of run-reads though defences will prefer to run to his side. Otherwise if Hill is left otherwise to read outside contain, he does not possess the recovery speed to make good on position let alone a tackle against especially a bigger player moving faster as well.

Imagine if Hill were MLB or OLB in the very same set in a short yardage situation not in a goal line set? Do you expect now for Hill to have magically obtained the reading skills of an LB in one off-season as he clearly does not demonstrate to a sufficient degree in this play?

This is another goal line set exposing severe deficiencies in Hill. Go to 0:37 for the start of the play, and then freeze the frame at 0:39. Note the correct outside contain by Hill and decent position relative to Cobb and readiness to make the play. Now play the rest of the clip. Does that look like even mediocre linebacker material to you? Try not to cry too.

Here was Laurent’s NFL draft profile in case you are curious.

His best athletic stats for the DT position were his 40 time, vertical jump, and broad jump as would all indicate great forward explosiveness.

His greatest athletic weakness though is his deficient lateral agility especially on his 3-cone drill, as I bet was also a factor in the fickle NFL scouts passing on him.

im hopeing we see mueller take some snaps

First off; I thank Poalo X for his research on T.J. Hill. Basically I was looking at his (not bad) stats as opposed to watching him on the field, so I will be taking a much closer eye approach on the LB’s this season. It’s going to be a good learning curve for Mueller and could be the #3 QB. That said, from an article I read in the Edmonton Journal today there could be another QB on the radar coming to camp in the next few days. However, I’m going to stick with Matt Nichols to back up Ricky Ray.

do you got a link to the article?

Here’s the link to that article on Mueller. About two thirds into the write-up it says when the other 3 get to camp on Sunday, another QB along with Ray will already be there. Unless I understood it wrong.

Position Depth Chart so far as of today. MadJack was correct (4-3 Defense) with R. Davis at MLB - The FS is T.J. Hill.

Didn't MadJack say they might go with a 3-4? I'm a little disappointed that they didn't. I was looking forward to something new.

Anyone else think we look a bit weak at receiver? The O-line looks relatively the same. Lotta names I don't recognize on the defence. It looks like we have an entirely new unit.

“In the past Stubler almost always ran a 3-4” is what was said by MadJack. I don’t think we look weak, however I guess we’ll find out soon enough what Crandell draws up for his play set. What I do hope for is Ray putting more ZIP on his passes.

That's it. . . Stubler has usually run a 3/4. . . maybe he isn't this year, we'll see. But yes, I did say if he was to run a 4/3, with Lloyd and Glatt gone, I'd move Davis into the middle and it looks like that is exactly what they're looking at too. But I wouldn't put too much stock in a Day 1 of Training Camp depth chart. . . I won't be surprised to see a 3/4 yet, if Stubler thinks he has the personnel for it. But moving TJ Hill to safety, I sure didn't see that one coming.

The only two guys I recognize from last year are Stamps and Nowacki, and if Nowacki’s a starter… eh. The other two starters are Bowman and Bauman, and Bauman didn’t do much in Hamilton. On paper, we’ve one of the weakest receiving corps in the league. Hopefully some of the new guys will step up.

Edit: Also, I think I misread your original comment when you posted the chart. My bad.

Expect another P/K to be in camp soon as per the scratching post/spec: Esks are talking to Nick Setta.
