Yes, he should. Even what should have been simply a normal season-end media avail per se will get him into trouble. lol
I’m thinking for a potential replacement at a linebacker position, GM Hervey should be taking a look at players like this one:
Sometimes keeping a good LB off other teams is a good idea. Bighill was vg for Bombers after Agros.
So, it depends on the contract.
Looks like one of the Ford brothers will be sticking around for a few more seasons.
Good news! It will be nice to have some continuity in the club next year.
Here’s also a handy link to NFL free agents, to which I figure management, coaches, and staff either have the data on these players or should:
What? Most fun?? For a young guy I s’pose life among the geezers “ain’t what’s it cracked up to be”. ![]()
Looks like the pending free agents list is out on 3DN for the Elks. Going team by team. IMO the team seems to be going in w/o too many major decisions, assuming Fajardo gets signed which I expect to happen. 13 of the 22 FA’s are @ REC & DL. I would think that they would lock up some of these by early in the New Year. Should be a very manageable group & lMO likely will have maybe half a dozen guys they might go after in FA next year.
I thought that the Elks would make a push this year but it may be a year late in coming. With only 3 guys currently over 30, they look like a team on the rise.
Edmonton Elks Punter Cody Grace has announced his retirement on Instagram last night ![]()
I think we’ll be fine with Julien, he’s got a great leg and he seems to be finding the corners a little better. I thought our special teams were a lot better this year.
That’s too bad. He was injured and I wonder if that is why he’s giving it up. Even if the Elks have Jake Julien there should have been someone else interested in him. He was none too shabby a punter.
Cody is too good to quit. Some team will try to get him.
Yea I 100% agree. Julien is, in my opinion, the best punter in the CFL.
Just sucks to see Grace go out like this. He’s been in my top 3 every season since I started watching (besides last season)
Been a Yankees fan since I was 8 ( thanx to Reggie Jackson!!) not “Canada’s” team to me…… sorry
True. But the Elks let Tony Jones go who played very well at both WIL & MLB but there was no room for him here. Bombers got him after he was released & he played at an All-Star calibre over there. But you can’t always keep everybody. He never made the team. Do you keep a guy like Mogensen who really has no currency at this point based upon his experience, or do you try to trade a guy like Morgan who you may get some assets for? In a recent interview Kilam talked about Dublanko & said his work effort had made him a ST captain, a big deal from Kilam, & by year end he was one of the captains on Defence.
I think what they need to do at this point is fill the holes. The basics of a great young team are here, now we need to fix the problem areas. As much as anything, trading a guy that can come back and hurt you is a mistake if you can find a way to keep him around.
It’s a tough tightrope to walk.
IMO, Mogensen has been an outstanding MLB, his play at the end of the season indicated that. It comes down to what we can keep for backups. As we saw, both Nick Anderson and Morgan injured this season, which gave Dublanko and Mogensen the opportunity to play.
So trade equity, vs. playing value, vs covering your ass in case of injury.
I will repeat the thought that Morgan may make an outstanding Safety…or bring much needed talent in a couple other areas in a trade.
I am looking at things primarily from Hervey’s comments re: not being able to necessarily afford all 4 of the “quartet”. Nyles was #7 on the money list for LB’s & Metchie #8 on highest paid DB’s & they already have Ford there #@ #1for DB’s. That would be a lot of money to invest in Safeties with both Nyles & Metchie. Royce, a National, is considered very highly at that position. The Elks also have cheaper players who can play safety like Kordell.
The other problem with putting Morgan back there IMO is that he’s a thick 6’0”, 230 lbs. The biggest DB’s they have now are Ford, Johnson & Logan all either 6’ or 6’1” & 200-210 lbs. Ross is 6’3”, 195 & Metchie is 5’11”, 203. Morgan likely would be the heaviest Safety in the league.
You don’t want to lose him to another team in the West but you have an embarrassment of riches @ LB. Sometimes a good player has to go. I agree with Hervey’s thinking that Nyles $$ might be better used elsewhere - perhaps on OL or receiver. And I, for one, felt at the beginning of this season that if I had to pick 5 players on the Elks that absolutely had to be signed, Nyles was one of them.
I should remember from talking to my car salesman Danny, that the best Middle Linebackers have “stumpy legs.” As a hall of fame linebacker himself, he would know.
If we decide to move on from any of those guys we will be doing them a favor as a Free agent, no doubt there would be a bit of a bidding war for them on the open market.
In any way it still leaves the Elks as one of the youngest teams in the league and probably set up well for coming years.
They’re in great shape, Squishy. Only Fajardo, 33, Beard, 32, & Ceresna, 31 are over 30. Ivez will be 31 early next season. Hardly old for their positions. They only have 20 FA’s with Julien-Grant & Ford already re-upped. And, as I’ve mentioned before - 9 GC rings on D, another 4 on Offence among the starters. It’s a young team hitting their prime years with a half dozen rookies who performed really well pushing for starting positions.
I really like what’s going on there. Sign Fajardo & beef up the OL & REC corps with a couple of good FA signings & they look really good. They have a lot of guys starting who are on cheap deals.
I’m assuming that “Danny” may be Danny Bass. (My brother lives in Edmonton).![]()
