As I have said before, Edmonton has wasted so many resources over the years trying to justify the name. If you need to take years studying the name, then there must be an issue somewhere. Team is in a league that barely survives. CFL does not need the bad publicity. I would think the Edmonton football team has better things to do than dealing with this issue every year. Sometimes, it is multiple times a year. For what, a name? Not worth it. Change it to Empire or whatever; get it over with; and move on.
Yes the word empire as in British Empire doesnât have a negative connotation to natives and other people around the globe .
I would think that SJWs would have better things to do with THEIR time.
Thatâs right, give in to a group of people that probably would never buy a ticket to watch a game anyhow. Then theyâre happy, until the next time they are offended by something that doesnât actually effect their lives.
Itâs easy for you to say change everything, youâre not paying to change the letterheads, names on buildings, banners, etc.
As you know the Eskimo team consulted the intuit people, the last several years and they overwhelming voted approval for the Eskimo team to continue to use that name. Felt it was an honour.
However others today are pushing for everything to be vanilla.
Shame to change for a few criers. Stand all is the new coming wave.
Eskimo football team has spoken with actual Inuit leaders the last few years. Inuit leaders have shared with the football team, that they are OK with it.
Only individual activists and white guilt martyrs are complaining.
Well then, Redblacks should be next on the chopping block.
This is a legitimate question, with no sarcasm or slight intended, and probably shows my ignorance, naiveness, and even my privileged white male status. But, when and why did the term "Eskimo" become a pejorative term, or racial slur? To me, it means a member of a northern indigenous tribe or clan, a group found living in the Arctic regions. Not unlike the indigenous labels of "Mohawk", "Cree", "Iroquois", "Hurons" or whatever. I really don't understand how it came to be considered a slur or an insult to that group of people.
Few people that complain have a lot on their hands. Not sure if they ever invested in sports or followed them at all.
Maybe they are soccer fans. Honestly how many United and or FCs can you have.
âŚnot exactly sure here but I believe the term was applied to the Inuit when white explorers first came across them, because they couldnât say the name the Inuit called themselves the explorers thought âeskimoâ sounded close enough and went with that, then sailed home and told their friendsâŚso the idea is that because it was an invented name, by white guys, it must somehow be derogatoryâŚ
Not to mention a near century of brand equity the team has carefully cultivated. âjustâ changing the name is actually quite a big deal and a giant risk
Iâm a Jedi and am offended.
You will be assimilated by the Borg .
From what I recall reading, Eskimo in reference to the Inuit, actually came from other Tribe(s) that were in contact with them. Europeans adopted the term from them?
The Eskimos shouldn't have to change the name if the Inuit support it. What I have problem is, people who are selfish, or self-righteous, thinking that just because they don't like it, it needs to be changed.
Now, with that being said, I can also see why some Native American tribes or First Nations, are upset about the NFL's Washington Redskins name, or any other sport teams that use an ethnic name for the fact of the matter. They say it's offensive or a racial slur, then they have that right to complain, protest or ask for it to be removed or the name to be changed. Now I come from German ancestors, you want to call me a Kraut, Bratwurst, Schwartz, Schwark ( my mothers maiden name), that's fine. But don't call me Hitler or Nazi! I dont have swastikas all over my house, I don't think the white people as the supreme race, we all live on this planet, lets peacefully co-exist! I feel sorry for the Jewish people because the Nazi's nearly wiped them right off the face of the Earth!
The Word Eskimo comes from Ojibwe meaning âto net snowshoesâ
https://www.uaf.edu/anlc/resources/inuit_or_eskimo.php , but it is also a word in some other indigenous languages meaning something along the lines of âeats raw meatâ.
Eskimo was the name given to the group by other indigenous groups (possibly Cree) when white people were exploring near the area.
The group themselves prefer Inuit, meaning âpeopleâ in Inuktitut. That is the problem that people are seeing. They think that because the Inuit donât like the term âEskimoâ (mostly because other groups gave it to them), that any reference to âEskimoâ must be offensive to the Inuit.
The part in italics is really the only controversy about this (excluding the meta-controversy about people being offended on behalf of other people).
Thanks to everyone for their input on the term âEskimoâ. I guess my thought is, as has been said here on other topics, if you repeat the same thing often enough, more and more people accept it, until it becomes âtrueâ. If the Edmonton Eskimos keep asking the Inuit if they are being insulted by the name, eventually, they will be.
Then they should stop asking the question, it is what it is and move on.
Rankin Inlet South MLA and Nunavut cabinet minister Lorne Kusugak says he is proud to hear that the Edmonton Eskimos are choosing to keep their name â despite pressure in recent years for the Canadian Football League team to drop the term widely considered offensive to Inuit.
Not tomorrow!! That will be next attacked why left for sure.
