Edmonton Elks Sale thread

I could win the $15 mill Lotto Max on Friday and if I made some “noise”, the CFL would be lookiing at me to buy the Elks, I wouldn’t doubt. Which would be a complete joke of course.

The CFL is desperate to find a market, hey it’s just a Canadian domestic league with limited revenue streams, whereas with the major leagues, like the Expos, they will find another market at a respectable price. This is what the majors have over domestic leagues like the CFL that can’t pay the big money for players. And then there is soccer which has almost everbody by the “nuggies” except for maybe the NFL, maybe. I don’t follow soccer well enough but even the lower divisions say in English soccer make a lot of money if I’m correct on this, don’t have a clue just my unknowledgeable thinking. Because a lower division soccer team in England can join the Division 1 thingy if I’m correct if they win the lower division? Sounds like a plan to me for Canadian football. But I’ll admit, I basically don’t understand how soccer works, all I know is it’s the world’s no. 1 spectator sport. My guess is the NFL execs total combined income won’t match the World Cup’s execs, in number of individuals and combined salaries. My guess is the NFL isn’t even close.

So … could a group of 7 and a group of 5 … OR … 12 individual bidders … OR … any other mathematically sound permutation.

They’re so desperate they had to turn parties away the last 3 team sales.

Ironically when the Edmonton based soccer team needed a buyer a few years ago the CPL couldn’t find one. And minor league soccer teams can sell player contracts to the highest bidder to make money!

Who is “they”? Didn’t know that about minor league teams selling player contracts. I have no idea about all of this in the soccer world, interesting though.

They as in the CFL.

Turn parties away that, my guess, didn’t have a whole heck of a lot of money behind them. As in a $15 mill Lotto Max Winner.

Tied up in some shady real-estate deals. This is making the Glieberman’s look good, they did have some $400 mill or so next to their names, legit I believe as well.

Why don’t we just have Tom Brady buy the CFL, my bet this could work, dude has to be bored in retirement. Just joking people, just joking.

Naylor on the Neilsen show today. Around the 1 hour 45 minute mark.

Expression of interests of interested groups and individuals now at 19. Number should increase since the deadline is mid April. Serious interest will be lower but better to have more to start.

Aim to have a shortlist by mid May and sale be mid June but no deadline.

Speculates significant interest from the US since NFL teams are well out of range for most.

Can buy the team with the interest of the interest of an NFL club lol. As long as the shoe fits

We would make a super team and finally be able to defeat the Stampeders. At least for one season.

Hope those tractor cowboys are down to earth. And call them Rough Eskies, a sled dog

Recession? What recession? Super Bowl tickets average $US 8400, and bidding to $54000 to scalping

Yup, I “asked” Dr. Google for the price of Blue Jays spring training tickets and this is how Dr. Google replied, don’t know how accurate this is but this is for games that don’t even count! Recession? Really?
" No matter what you’re looking to spend, Vivid Seats has tickets to fit your budget. Currently, Toronto Blue Jays spring training tickets start at $21 with an average price of $61 ."

So about half a dozen groups invited to give formal proposals.

With the large amount of interest the sale is now expected to wrap up mid season. Need time to vet these groups. No need to rush anything.

Biggest drop being gate receipts being down 21.7 percent despite an increase of announced attendance.

Bids for the team are expected soon. Interest remains strong and they’ll have enough in the stabilization fund to get through this season.

OEG Inc to buy Elks?

Multiple sources have confirmed to Postmedia that the Oilers Entertainment Group has been working with city officials and the UCP government on a plan to have the province make a major sports and cultural investment in Edmonton — including, potentially, upgrades Commonwealth Stadium

As for the other parts of the potential deal, there are reportedly still some things to work out, including what to do with Commonwealth Stadium

The city has previously asked the province for $180 million to modernize Commonwealth — a now 46-year-old facility that did not show well when Edmonton tried to land hosting duties for the 2026 FIFA World Cup

However, there is a debate about whether the city is actually best served in the long run by sinking money into Commonwealth, or if it might be better to build a new, smaller stadium that is more soccer and/or concert friendly. That’s undoubtedly the more expensive option, and it’s unclear what the province might be willing to contribute and whether OEG would be involved.

Not sure Edmonton wants to give up those winter NHL games that sell-out at Commonwealth where I’m sure the bleeds aren’t even that cheap. This is going to be interesting what happens with Commonwealth for sure knowing what Rogers has done with the Rogers Centre major upgrades that have really transformed the stadium so it seems at least to me on TV and what I’ve read, haven’t been there since all these major upgrades.

In my daydreams, Taylor Swift and Kelce boys buy the Elks. The resulting hype bring lots of excitement to Edmonton and the CFL. Then I woke up, and Nanook took his anger in game one.

What planet do you live on? Its a concrete behemoth well past its prime.

Something new - down the street, with parking, corporate suites, and real grass again. Build it for football and soccer and get the stands much closer to the field, with at least covered seating, at most a roof, and if possible a movable field for concerts, hockey and other events.
