TORONTO — Under the Canadian Football League (CFL) and the CFL Players’ Association’s (CFLPA) joint drug policy, defensive lineman Darien Newell is ineligible to sign a contract with a CFL Club for one calendar year.
Wow ! and I was hoping that Hamilton was going to draft him . Thank God we didn’t . Nice job of vetting there Hervey . Right on top of things as usual I see .
Ed Hervey was on local radio Ched 880 last night speaking about the issue. I’m kind of on the fence about this one. I understand that the team is loaded with talent this year and Darien Newell likely wouldn’t have been a factor for this year. I guess they can afford to wait until next year. Ed Hervey insists the proper vetting was done with this player and that he will fit into the culture they are trying to build in Edmonton. I get that we may need to give people second chances and this is a very good player for the future. I’m just not certain the EE really needed to step into this or take this player as their first pick. We are ready to start our season and this is a distraction once again.
I was negative about E Kane for the Oilers but he proved he very wrong. Except for party with Gov Wayne and Maga. Hopefully Newell will be an asset, banned substances are not the end of the world. Anyways, EE is loaded with Nats on the DL this year.
You have a great point. I think though we assume that once athletes stop taking these drugs the benefit is lost. There could be a longer lasting effect. However, the team must be confident this player can still be a great player or they likely wouldn’t have taken this on.
More than a few Dickie critics figured the Stamps should have taken the plunge…off the deep end so to speak. Wonder if he will be the same player after a year off the stuff? He should be able to maintain his muscle development. The rest is a?
PS: You guys should watch the TSN Kilam interview at the draft regarding Newell. The way he was dancing around the interview it’s my opinion that they knew what they were getting and that it wouldn’t be this year.
Who is to know for any single case, but in aggregate for athletes who are juicers and dopers, take the under on their future as pros in the same sport, if not altogether as pro athletes.
