Edmonton Coach Steps down back to just be GM

The Edmonton Eskimos made changes on Thursday as Danny Maciocia stepped aside as head coach. Maciocia will now concentrate on his duties as director of football operations. The team did not name a replacement for their head coaching position.

Coaches are Falling left and right ..

do you know the difference between director of football operations and GM?

The talk Doug Berry could the head coach there

My money is on Greg Marshall, current DC with Winnipeg.

However, Berry did coach with Danny @ Montreal under Taaffe.

Well I'll take that bet.

Look at it this way.

When Higgins was shown the door, the choice in Edmonton was between their DC, Greg Marshall, and their OC, Danny Maciocia. Danny got the job; rather than staying and working under him, Greg Marshall left and went to Ottawa as DC. Then he applied for the head coach position in Winnipeg but lost out again, this time to Doug Berry.

But he agreed to sign on as DC under Berry; something he didn't do in Edmonton.............even though that is where he lives.

That tells me that he doesn't want to work under Maciocia, so I don't see him becoming HC there if Maciocia retains his portfolio as Director of Football Operations.

There's a lot of people here in Edmonton that are happy about this.

Maybe we can bring him to the Hammer........Just kidding.

Here is a link to an article on edmontonsun.com today containing the following short list of six candidates to become the next head coach of the Edmonton Eskimos and the pros and cons of each candidate:

  1. Richie Hall
  2. Doug Berry
  3. Chris Jones
  4. Noel Thorpe
  5. Mike Benevides
  6. Greg Marshall

I would think Chris Jones has the inside track after the defense he put together in Calgary.

No but I’ll bet it’s a combo of fancier title (DoFO), semantics, and accompanying bigger $$$; managers only “manage”, directors “direct”.

This article on edmontonjournal.com today states that Danny Macoccia has discussed the head coaching position with Greg Marshall, Chris Jones and Richie Hall. A new name added to the list of possible candidates is Danny Langsdorf, a former Eskimo assistant coach who is now the offensive coordinator at Oregon State:
