Acc to reports, the Elks have asked permission to talk to Ed Hervey about the GM position for the Elks. Hervey was a team- mate of their new president, Chris Morris.
Too bad so sad.
The team he assembled to start this season was the worst in the league.
Who did he sign of value?
I would say one DB who he made the highest paid db in the league.
Depending who we would get to replace him I would have zero problem and in fact I prefer if he moves on.
We got rid of him once already…
If the Elks want Hervey, they will get him. It makes economic sense for him to work there, since he already owns a home in Edmonton.
Guys I would like to see replace Hervey:
-Jim Barker
-Danny McManus
-Duane Forde (not sure about his US connections, but no one knows more about emerging Canadian talent than Forde)
I’m all in on Danny Mac
Caretaker, MAKE THE CALL
Mac or Barker.
Good news continues…
Ted Goveia is also a great choice.IMHO. below is bio I found.
Assistant General Manager, Director of Player Personnel
Ted Goveia joined the Blue Bombers in December of 2013 as the team’s Assistant General Manager, Director of Player Personnel. Previously, Goveia held down the role of Director, Player Personnel with the Toronto Argonauts, working free agent camps and scouting in both the United States and Canada, as well as coordinating the CFL Canadian Draft. Prior to that, Goveia had been responsible for recruitment strategies in both Canada and the U.S. for the Argos, scouting various NFL pre-season camps. He first joined the Argos in 2010 as an assistant coach and prior to that spent 15 years in various coaching and recruitment capacities throughout the CIS and Canadian Junior Football ranks.
Ted Goveia has a long resume full of Canadian coaching and football recruitment experience. He’s held positions at the University of British Columbia, McMaster University, Mount Allison University and he spent 2010 coaching the Toronto Argonauts’ running backs. He’s also held fulltime coaching positions in the CJFL, at the high school level and gained extensive experience as a guest coach in the CFL. All told, Goveia has been part of every level of football in Canada.
Goveia joined the UBC Thunderbirds as the Offensive Coordinator in 2004. In 2006, he was promoted to Head Coach and G.M and was responsible for developing a number of CFL prospects who went on to be drafted and play for a variety of teams in the league.
Goveia wore many different hats during his time at McMaster University from 2001-04. He coached the receivers, running backs and special teams while also serving as the team’s Recruitment Coordinator. In his role he was responsible for all aspects of recruitment which resulted in some of the largest and most successful recruitment classes in the history of the program. He helped the Marauders to three straight Yates Cup finals.
Goveia held the position of Recruitment Coordinator at his alma mater, Mt. Allison University, from 1994-98. In addition to his position, he served as Offensive Coordinator, Offensive Line Coach and Defensive Line Coach. At Mount A he eventually took charge of all administrative aspects of the football program while helping the Mounties set new CIS team and individual records. Goveia helped Mount A to the AUS finals in 1996 & 1997, winning the championship in ‘97. He ensured players were excelling in the classroom and his athletes attained a 92% graduation rate.
A former offensive lineman from 1991-93 for the Mt. Allison Mounties, Goveia has held coaching positions in the CJFL with the Burlington Braves and Oakville Longhorns. In Burlington, he was head coach and led the club to three provincial finals. He also coached at Assumption High School in Burlington where he once attended and played football. Goveia was a guest coach at Toronto Argonauts training camp each year from 2001-08.
If Pinball cannot be bought, i would go with Barker.
Baker for me.
Danny Mac doesn’t come across to me like a super sharp executive.
More like one of the frat boys.
In addition if Ticats suspect he might move along they need to get ahead of it and grant him his free agency and get on with their new gm search.
The Chad Kelly incident should be enough to turn people off on Pinball.
Same with Barker’s comments about women around football players.
Get out your pitchfork and torch…I’ll join you and make it twice.
Further to Lenny’s post I’ve always thought Goveia deserved a shot somewhere. He may get interviewed in Edmonton. If Hervey leaves I’d welcome him here. Same with Danny Mac. Or maybe they would give Geroy Simon a shot? The league is running out of guys to recycle unless Barker wants one last kick at it.
I imagine Hervey will end up back in Edmonton and probably keep Geroy Simon as his assistant as they’ve worked together before. Speaking of replacing Hervey in Hamilton with Ted Goveia, I have always thought he would be a good choice for GM in Halifax if they ever get a team going there. He is an East Coast guy who would know the landscape so to speak.
No excuse for Kelly’s behaviour but the way he has been playing lately, Pinball may be getting another Grey Cup ring.
McManus for GM and Forde for director of Canadian scouting.
I agree because it’s a lateral move possibility for Hervey. It’s common that a team grants permission for an employee to be interviewed for a higher ranked position, with another team, and then retain that employee’s services when the interview doesn’t lead to a job offer. But, in this situation of Hervey having interest in moving from GM, here, to GM, there, and with his Hamilton contract about to expire, if the club was planning to re-sign him, I say offer him a new deal, now, and if he doesn’t accept it, then grant EDM’s request, by just setting him free. As I do with players, I want staff, here, who really want to be here.
im not sure Danny Mac has been full time in Canada in a long time.
Goveia is intriguing, though Naylor/Lalji seemed to imply that the Ticats may look within to fill the role. If Steinauer is on the books in 2025 I don’t know how you go out and hire a GM away from a successful franchise given resource constraints. Feels like Hervey got this role to serve 2 purposes:
- Help us out of a bind
- Give him an audition to get another job
It would appear based on the contract situation that the Cats were never serious about him being a long term GM of this team.
My fear is that they would just hand the job to Steinauer, as I’ve yet to see any proficiency there in bringing in talent. Allemang has been here forever it seems but hasn’t been trusted with the role yet and we really don’t know much about Zimmerman either.
I don’t think that would bode well for season ticket sales imo
