Does TSN Give The CFL Enough Respect?

TSN has done quite a bit, but definitely they can do a hell of a lot better.
There should be a pre game show for every night worth of football.
The garbage with the NFL all day pre game on Sunday morning that is plain unacceptable.
Who cares, this is Canada.
I don't give a rats rectum about Al Davis, the Bills or the spreads in the pools etc..
As for the 4 major leagues, that is also correct as even to TSN the CFL is not considered major, despite the numbers being close to hockey.
It's the same example as the coverage in the Toronto Sun, even though it has improved considerably for the Argos and the league, it will get nothing close to the over the top NHL and Leaf coverage.
Here is an example, after the Leafs opening night game, count them it was 15 pages of Sports in the section for this nonsense.

Nothing will ever compete with hockey anywhere in Canada. The papers in Winnipeg will be 98% jam packed with articles about the Winnipeg Jets. And they should be. The Bombers probably won’t be mentioned. Oh well.

And just because you don’t care about the NFL doesn’t mean TSN should ignore the passing of a legend to dream up some story about the CFL. They already do a lot.

What part of other leagues get more time because they have more games to show is so hard to understand?

All this is is a bunch of people continually re-stating the same old thing in the face of a bunch of posts that say exactly why it isn’t so. Nobody has anything to say about anything like this:

TSN isn't just "not as bad" as the CBC was. They are very good. Do you not remember how pathetic the coverage used to be? Now, as I mentioned earlier, we have the top-50 players thing every year. We have the weekly game ball segment. We have the panel on SC whenever there's a CFL game. There's plenty of coverage on SportsCentre. EVERY GAME is televised.. and now, we have the draft on TV! We have actual prospect rankings. It wasn't long ago there were CFL games untelevised. Now we have all this. So they skip a pre-game show now and then.. oh well! It's come a long way, and right now, the CFL is definitely treated at least as well as the NHL and NFL and better than MLB and the NBA.
... they just decide to say that the CFL coverage sucks, even though it's really quite good.

And maybe we don’t get quite equal time compared to other leagues… well yeah - we have one game, maybe two games a night… four games a week… there’s a lot more to talk about in the other, bigger leagues.

Respect means nothing in tv. RATINGS mean everything. As soon as TSN gets the ratings for pre/post game shows to justify their regular occurance, I'm sure they'll put them on. They are out to make money, not give respect. If Sportscentre has higher ratings than CFL post game, they'll do Sportscentre.
So if you want there to be more CFL content, you need more viewers to justify it. Of course what they do now can be improved, nothing is perfect (except Christina Hendricks) so they can fix some stuff. But talking respect when many millions are on the line is missing the point. Ratings, thus add revenue, call the shots.

If ratings mean everything as you say, then TSN should be giving the CFL a weekly show as well as a pregame show every game.
And should not even mention the NBA and most baseball games.

Here's the problem with the Canadian media as I stated earlier.
Its run by dinosaurs from Toronto who think there's only 4 major sports.

Even though the CFL is more popular then three of these so called major sports.
It gets less billing because its not considered a major sport.
IEven though its 1A its own country.
Figure that one out.

If you think that ANYTHING was dislodging the Jets from the top story on TSN today then you’re delusional. And yes, a fairly important person in the sports world dying tends to get higher coverage then a story mentioning there’s a game tonight. This is not new, and it’s not CFL specific. Either you have a very selective memory or you just haven’t been paying attention to how TSN operates.

I made that post on Friday night.
Not yesterday.

Ratings don’t mean everything. I’m not sure how many times people have to tell you that. In fact, demographics matter just as much (if not more) as ratings, and demographics lead to the one true measure: money.

The NHL has more sponsors willing to pay more money to get ad time then the CFL does. That means NHL games bring in more money then CFL games, no matter what the ratings are. Like it or not, the NHL audience is what marketing departments want to reach.

That’s not TSN’s fault. It’s reality. As a business TSN would be stupid to ignore it. The talk shows are mostly hockey because talking hockey brings in more money then talking football. In the business world, bringing in money is the only measure that matters.

Tom Brady will sell more then any player in the CFL. I don't like that fact, but it's reality. Not sure why we even bother comparing the CFL and NFL. It's apple and oranges and we will never be close to that market. Brady makes more in one year than the entire CFL payroll combined. Lets just enjoy are game and suppport it (TORONTO) ,and appreciate how entertaining our game is. Tsn can do what ever they want and their decisions have made them very successful!

Don't get where you're coming from?
I wouldn't know who Tom Brady was if I ran over him.
And you're saying TV ratings don't driver advertisers?
Wrong.

And 33 million people in Canada wouldn’t know you if they ran over you. What’s your point? Tom Brady is a well known name and denying it is just delusional.

Also you have no idea what you’re talking about when it comes to TV. Demographics matter more then ratings. A show that scores a 3 rating but has almost all of it in 18-49 will command more advertising dollars then a show that scores a 4 rating but has it scattershot all over the demographics (or even worse, has it primarily focused on seniors).

Ratings are at best only half of the picture, and the lack of understanding of that is why people on this forum are the only ones on the planet who think the next TV deal will be triple the current one. It’s not happening.

I agree 100% with DEPINC. The coverage of the CFL before TSN came along with an exclusive contract was sad-sack at best. Now, while there is always room for improvement, it actually treats the league like a major player instead of a minor league franchise, like the CBC had a horrible habit of doing.

I'll NEVER forget the Saturday all-day coverage TSN gave the Grey Cup two years ago. I had never seen anything like for the CFL. EVER. It was fantastic. TSN is doing a brilliant job IMHO.

But for non-NFL fans is he more known for being a football player or for being married to Gisele Bundchen.

Gisele who?

Or do you mean the antelope?

Doesn’t matter. Known is known. What are the Kardashians known for? And yet, somehow they draw huge ratings. Just because you or I think that it’s stupid or wrong doesn’t change the fact. Same applies to CFL coverage vs. NFL coverage. A person may not like the business model used by TSN, but it is a private business that makes its owners money.

Agree with Depop here.
To be honest, when I look at the number of fans drawn in TOTAL, over all broadcast games (as opposed to fans on a per-game basis), the NFL, NHL, and MLB probably ALL produce more total dollars for TSN than CFL does. By broadcasting each and every CFL game, TSN has maximized their return from the CFL, and extra coverage via pre- and post- game shows would probably produce a loss on the balance sheet. Lets face it, a large percentage of eyeballs skip the pre- and post- game stuff and tune in for the kickoff, and leave at the final gun. A few die-hards, such as the people on this board, do not carry enough weight to make advertisers pony up for the extra coverage. TSN is not in the business of providing charity programming. Sad, but true.

Anyone who thinks that any other business, be it CBC, Rogers Sportsnet, or Uncle Bob’s Cable, would do any different is either naive or kidding themselves.

First, Sportdesk is a sports news program. Their role is not to promote any event, but rather to report on it. They report their stories in the order of general importance in the sporting world. You or I may not agree with their priorities, but they don’t pick their lineup at random. CFL ALWAYS leads post game, but lets face it, to sports fans in general, MLB playoffs and Al Davis’ death are bigger stories than CFL. In Canada, hockey, any hockey, is a bigger story than CFL. Like I said, you or I may not agree with it, but it is what it is. TSN does not exist to cater solely to CFL fans, but to sports fans in general. I don’t like watching curling, but when the World Championships are on, I understand how curling would be the lead story. To say that the CFL should always have priority is ridiculous. It is the same as a soccer fan wanting full coverage of every TFC game to lead the network. Or Man U game.

The CFL does get covered by TSN, and Sportsdesk always shows highlight packages from every game. Does the NFL get highlight packages from every game? No. When is the last time you saw highlights from a Bengals game, or a Cleveland Browns game? See? Not every NFL game gets covered. But every CFL game does.

Second, the role of promoting a game does fall to advertising. There have been complaints that the CFL is not promoted on TSN. Well, last night, I was watching Sunday Night Football (yes, I watch NFL, too, even though I watch CFL first), and guess what I saw? Go on, guess? I saw CFL commercials. Commercials promoting the league, and commercials promoting the games today. Throughout the NFL contest, I saw these ads disbursed. So yes, TSN does advertise and promote the CFL. And they did it during the highest rated NFL time slot of the day, too!

It used to be that we bitched and whined about the officiating in the CFL. Now it seems we have moved on to bitching about the best coverage that the CFL has ever had. Can there be improvements? Sure. Fire Rod Black. Nothing is perfect, but I, for one, will happily take the best we have ever had, and say “thank you” for it.

I guess some people are only happy when they are whining. Go be a victim somewhere else. I have football to watch. :rockin:

Nah. MLB and NBA r dogs with fleas. If the NBA doesnt play one game this year nobody will care

spoken like someone who knows they can’t muster a logical argument to support their theory.

When you get right down to it, benji is exactly the same as the people on other forums who badmouth the CFL only on the other side. There’s no difference in the behavior.

Yup. And I think those guys are idiots, too.

Agreed.

There are more poeple on this thread, and I consider myself as one who don't care for anything to the with the NFL, NBA or MLB.
In fact, any US run sport league.
To further illustrate, the same Americans who have taken our national sport hockey and turned it into a joke the way the NHL has been mishandled for years.
