As someone who wanted Don Sutherin as head coach when Ron Sr. left...I hoped that the magic from the master would come back into the team under Marshall.
The jury was out for me regarding Kavis Reed until the last couple of minutes tonight.
I get wistful, I suppose, remembering how Ralph Sazio used to call defences (or Sudsy for that matter) which actually challenged opposing QBs when the game is on the line. Now we get Arena Football umbrella-d lite...and we get smoked.
Even Stubs (Rich Stubler) --in his most "bend but don't break" moments -- makes the right call and throws some form of pressure at Burris in that situation. Instead, we get a 40-yard-drop on a 20-yard = field goal range situation. Good night, Irene.
Ill tell you what I would like to see and thats Les Browne brought in as a DB coach . I think we could use a Hall of Fame coach who I believe still lives in Hamilton right ??
If a coordinator loses his job during the season, it is customary to hire within the staff as the new guy would have some familiarity with the personnel, the unit’s strengths and weaknesses, etc.
The “what then” issue would be more of an overall situation during the offseason in terms of major changes if warranted. A lost season often becomes an audition for next season, as we have experienced all too often before.
I mean, with Madden I can always hit "delete," eh? LMAO
There is no such quick fix in real life. This does not diminish the fact we need the defence fixed from a coaching perspective. There is no coherence/progression to what we do from week to week re gameplanning, halftime adjustments, and the instilling of an overall philosophy/identity. Two-plus years and we still have this...
I would like to add my 2 cents worth on this topic. First stats do not win a game. Yes we gave up yardage, but we did not give up many points. I sat through many games in the past where Sudsy and Deke were coaching where the defence did the exact same thing as on Thursday night. When we needed them to come up big they didn't. This is not something new for the Ticats. Even when Montford was here the defence many times let the other team march down the field late in the game. It happens. We have a new OC, new QB and new receivers. It will take time for them all to get on the same page. This is game 3, relax.
My concern regarding this team is the number of stupid penalies they take. This is undiscipline playing. Discipline starts at the HC. He may look all tense on the sidelines, but with the number of penalties that the players take, he obviously doesn't back up his bark. Until the penalties are controlled this team is going to suffer. How many times are other team's drives kept alive because of selfish stupid penalties? Too many.
I say get the team under control or expect a long season.
