DC prospects

From a few days ago

the feeling is Hamilton’s struggles on the defensive side of the ball had nothing to do with Creehan. The speculation is if Creehan becomes available, Burke will snap him up immediately.

Former Bombers defensive co-ordinator Greg Marshall is making the rounds at the Grey Cup this week, and he told the Sun on Friday he is interested in getting back into the coaching ranks. If the Bombers want to talk about the vacant co-ordinator position, he’s ready and willing to listen.

Would like to know whose "feeling" it is that Creehan wasn't responsible for our poor D...

It appeared Ticats head coach George Cortez was going to retain Creehan, but when Burke came calling he gave his blessing.

Wondering: Would Jim Daly, whose special teams had a very successful year, be considered for the DC`s job?

Well, Carlos Thomas felt that way to some extent. He’s the only player who has said so publicly (via Twitter - note that Twitter starts with “Twit” :stuck_out_tongue: ), but there may have been others. I also remember Drew mentioning that Creehan hadn’t been able to use the defensive schemes he would have liked; no real indication whether that was due to injuries or handcuffs from Cortez.

Greg Marshall

If we hire another scrub with little to no experience as a Defensive Coordinator, then that tells me Cortez is running the scheme that he wants and playing the personnel that he chooses. Someone that he can push or boss around, if you will. If that is in fact the case, then what an A-hole, considering he's an offensive guy.

Gregg Marshall would be perfect. He even likes to run the scheme that Cortez prefers! Only Marshall would do it right.

Etcheverry would be my next choice.

8) Greg Marshall would be ok, but definitely not Gary Etcheverry !!
Etcheverry has been a disaster with almost every job he has held in the CFL !! Lasts about 1 or 2 years at max, and
  then is fired !!

I' Would like to see them give Orlando Steinauer the job! He did great things with the argos secondary and knows the game well :cowboy:

Ah, I"d love to have Etcheverry. His wild and wacky defensive schemes are a treat to watch.

That’s MadJack the fan of defensive football talking.

Now if I were team ownership of the Tiger Cats, I’d sure think twice. . .

Except, of course, for that run he had in Saskatchewan. You know the one, where the Riders made the Grey Cup twice. Yeah, sounds like a disaster to me.

Something stinks. Creehan was part of the coaches who evaluated each player by position. So a week or so down the road they let him slither back to Winnipeg. I don't understand most of the decisions that are coming from Cortez. One thing that should happen. The new DC should take part in the player evaluation process becuase the current defensive decisions were influenced by Creehan. I persoanlly don't care who they bring in except for this person must be the best defensive mind available and have a proven track record of turning things around quickly.

Marcel Bellefeuille did exit interviews last year and look at what happen to him ! There in very little chance to have a new coach right after the season as most of them are tied to other teams unless they promote from with in.

I’m thiknig he would. It would be pretty dumb if he didn’t. That’s his job.

waterloowilly:

I think Orlando Steinauer would be a good choice too. BUT. Looks to me like whoever gets the DC job will have to run whatever schemes Cortez wants. I don’t know many DC’s who would want to work like that and not have the freedom to come up with their own game plans.

From Drew’s blog:

Creehan alienated some Ticat players with his in-your-face style and was reportedly reluctant to take advice from veterans, even while the team struggled mightily for much of the season. But he had little influence over personnel decisions and his unit was ravaged by injuries, particularly at the key strong-side linebacker spot.
Kind of explains that quote from Rey Williams during the season where he said they've been bugging Creehan to let them blitz more often. If he didn't have much of a say in personnel, it would definitely be Cortez who overruled him.

Search is on for Creehan’s replacement as Ticat defensive co-ordinator

Cortez has made contact with a number of candidates — he won’t say who — and has asked permission to speak to several more. At the top of his list of must-have qualifications: someone who knows the Canadian game.

“I think CFL experience is very important in this position,? Cortez said. “That would include people in the league and people that have been in the league before.?

“I know what creates the most problems for us on offence and I would like that to be a part of what we do,? Cortez said. “It’s about how you take a quarterback and play caller out of their comfort zones.?
There is no timeline for a decision, though Cortez said he’d like to have the process wrapped up as soon as possible so the team can focus on revamping its roster.

“Our goal is to be better on defence, but the improvement will come in a variety of ways,? Cortez said. “We hope to have better personnel on the field as well as a new co-ordinator.?

I would take Greg Marshall in a heartbeat. We know our D was one of the top 4 in the league when he was here and I think the fans would prefer a familiar face at this point.

That would be an impressive stat in a 30 team league but alas, there are only 8 clubs in the CFL…

This year, we were barely in the top four in the east…

Persoanlly, I could care less about familiarity. I just want a decent defense no matter who can bring it.
