Daronte Jones: New DB coach

Interesting hire, going outside the CFL. There must be a connection to the current coaching staff.

Oh well, there goes our idea of bringing in Barron Miles. . . mind you the new guy's got an impressive resume.

My only concern is that we failed to address special teams. I'm still uncomfortable having Bischoff doing double duty, and would have preferred a true special teams coordinator rather than having the running backs coach take care of special teams as well. Mind you, lord knows he has lots of time to devote to special teams, given how often we run the ball. . .

I felt the same way you do a while back, but upon further reflection, I’m okay with Bischoff wearing both hats. The other two coordinators both have multiple portfolios. Tibesar is the DC and linebackers coach; Milanovich is OC, Assistant HC, and QB coach. Why shouldn’t Bischoff do both jobs? I think the first half of the 2010 season is when ST struggled the most, but it seemed to me that as Bischoff got more comfortable with the job, the unit started to improve, to the point where we held the mighty Chad Owens in check in the east final while scoring a TD on a punt return, and even pulled off a successful direct snap to Deslauriers in the Grey Cup game. Most of our ST problems toward the end of the season revolved around Duval and his, um, inconsistency (to use a polite term) and had IMO very little to do with Bischoff.

Put it this way: if Trestman didn’t think Bischoff could do both jobs in 2011, he would have stepped in. I have complete confidence in Marc’s ability to evaluate his coaches and put them in positions to succeed.

If we get a permanent practice facility in 2011, I think you’ll see most of our ST problems vanish.
