Can anyone explain what the term “suspended” means in this article? It seems like a vague term to protect a player from being picked up by another team.
There can be several reasons a player is suspended for other than conduct issues.
A signed player doesn’t show up at training camp.
A player suddenly quits training camp.
A promising rookie is injured but the team wants him back once he’s recovered.
A draft pick is returning to school for his final year.
The suspension allows the team to retain the player’s rights and doesn’t allow him to sign in another league. I imagine in the case of an injured player it is done with the player’s consent.
