where is this international league located  ....What a silly change...it'll always be import to me

I can see why they've gone to international / national. It centres the reader's focus on the national, which is naturalized as the default state, compared to import/non-import, where the Canadian player winds up sounding like an adjunct to the American because the descriptor (non-import) is negative -- i.e. it describes only what the Canadian is not, rather than what he is.

...so the non-import connotation ,illustrated and suggested, a Canadian was an adjunct and a kind of non-entity ,with the former non-import title......which is nebulous because I'm sure I've seen a lot of them on the field for a number of decades...Which brings us to....'what's in a name'..Seems the CFL thinks it means quite a lot to make the change...Myself...not so much..but I guess I'll get used to it..

What`s next? Calling the pre-season games "friendlies"?

Meh
They could have changed the criteria without changing the import non-import

Like George W. Bush once said

Most of our imports come from other countries

I think that papazoola hit it on the head, the switch was because "non-import" was a slightly dismissive term.

.....Georgie boy also said, when talking about American business versus business circles in France...quote' "the French don't even have a word for entrepreneur ".....  good ol George...he certainly was not an academic...

http://en.montrealalouettes.com/article/alouettes-transactions-20140615032005
PLAYERS RELEASED
Ismael Bamba WR Sherbrooke National
Jheranie Boyd WR North Carolina International
Robert Godhigh RB Georgia Tech International
C.J. James DE Colorado State International
Collin Klein QB Kansas State International
Stephon Robertson LB James Madison International

The Alouettes have also added offensive lineman Pascal Baillargeon to the six-game injured list.

The Alouettes will make four more transactions before 11:59 p.m. on Sunday night.

Is releasing Klein to just eventually bring him back on the practice roster or have they given him the A Knight's Tale treatment (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPBV33lx9Ls)

Sorry to respond to my own post, hate that, but a thought hit me and it is too late to EDIT.

Do they really need more time to decide on the other four or might there be further injuries they are awaiting reports on, or possible deals. Wondered about whether it might be because of possible pickups from other teams but then realized they could do that tomorrow and cut someone then.

Most probably because these last four are tougher decisions. They want,I imagine, review game films. Transactions always a possibility.

Richard

I definitely expect 2 OL,possibly 1 more DL, possibly 1 DB and possibly 1 Nat. LB amongst remaining cuts.

Tweet from Herb:

RT .@HerbZurkowsky1: Breaking: #Als attempting to trade FB Jerome Messam. Otherwise, he'll be released. #CFL #Alouettes

I thought he would be released in the off-season. Messam that is, not Herb.

Very interesting. Messam could fit in well in Hamilton. C.O. Prime had a very tough showing @ FB yesterday. Dropped at least a couple passes. Tough spot transitioning positions & I would hope Coach/GM Austin would give him time but this is pro football & often a tough business. Not saying they'd release Prime ... but Messam would be a fit to the role if he can get his head/ego around playing FB in an offense featuring CJ.

Thanks for the information,idealsheldon.

Richard

Can we speak to Tillman and try to get Masoli for Messam?

Masoli would we great addition for the Als,but the Tiger-Cats won't bite. More likely LeFevour.

Ottawa would also be a destination for Messam. Future draft choice or Patrick Lavoie.

Richard

Ottawa has Lavoie and Delahunt, don`t think they need Messam.

The one team desperate for NON-IMPORTS (Nationals is not coming from my keyboard!) is Winnipeg.

Not surprised that we're shopping Messam. He's never been a great blocker and he sure as hell isn't beating out Whitaker or Sutton for the starting RB job. Lumbala is younger and probably better-suited to be a blocking fullback and short-yardage specialist in our offense.

Once it's out there that a player is getting released ... very little comes back in a trade if anything. If you trade for the player, you pick up their contract as is. In the case of a player like Messam, that can be a factor. If he clears waivers ... he's a Free Agent and can go anywhere and not necessarily at his current contract #'s.

Waiver period is 48 hours at this stage of the season. Waiver priority is Ottawa, Winnipeg ... Hamilton, Saskatchewan for the first 6 games of the 2014 season ... then it gets re-ranked worst to first. When you pick a player up off waivers ... you pick up his current & existing contract

So, if a team really wants to get a player like Messam and don't want to risk him getting picked up off waivers ... they may feel that its good value to trade something to jump the waiver cue. They'll also look at their waiver wire priority and evaluate the likelihood of the player being taken by a team ahead of them.

If the feeling is that the player will clear waivers, because of contract or other issues, they're best to wait the 48 hours and make their bid.

Bottom line to me ... I don't think any teams are trading for or claiming Messam off waivers with his contract #'s which I imagine are more than what most teams will want to pay for his services. He'll clear waivers and be a free agent. Then it's best $'s & situation for Jerome.
